Finally broke down and am having a 6-06 put together on an accurized rem 700 action. I keep hearing that the 6-06 will outperform the .240 wby "slightly" but having trouble getting a feel for how much increased performance is realistic. I will be shooting 95-105 grain bullets pretty much exclusively as this was designed as a long range coyote rig. Anybody shoot both and have a feel for how much more speed is realistic (I am not interested in pushing pressures to unreasonable levels just to gain a few fps) out of the '06 case all else being equal? Thanks

The 6-06 is about 4-5% larger case capacity since the 240Wby is nothing but an 06 case reduced in DIA to form the belt. So using a 1 to 4 ration a 4% capacity will give you a 1% velocity. So 30-40fps. Longer barrel will get you more than that small case increase. I built a 240PDK basically a Gibbs style 280 case. Only gave me an extra 100fps over my 6mm As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Thanks! Just what I was looking for. Now it will be interesting to see what my rifle will do. Should have it in a month or so. Will give me a little time to play before antelope and fur seasons get going.

Fred Barnes built me a 6mmx.270 IMP. With full loads the only bullet that stayed together on mule deer was the 110gr Barnes bullet (thick jacket). That was the hammer of Thor. Tried many cup and core bullets including the Speer 105 gr. semi RN. All exploded on contact. Did not ,however, try any partitions. This was back in 1967. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

I built a 6mm-06 on a Remington 700, same as you. I had Pac-Nor install a 28" stainless super match barrel on it. Sendero contour. I have been using Hornady 87 Grain HPBT'S as I view my rig as a long range chuck or P dog rig. With IMR4831, I am getting over 3700 fps, and sub .5 groups. Really a fun rig to shoot. So far my longest kill has been a jack rabbit @614yds, and I figure I will get one out at or beyond 700yds next spring. Too hot here now. Good luck with yours, and work up your own data. I used 240 Wby loads as my starting point and work up from there. I watched for the usual pressure signs, and a fall off of velocity on the chronograph. Most bullet slow powder combinations worked pretty well. Enjoy Jerry NRA Benefactor Life Member

Thanks bartsche and Jerry. Both sound like nice setups. I am planning on starting with mid-range .240 data and working up from there. Will be neat to see what the 26" bartlein will do. Anything north of 3400 that maintains 1/2 moa or better should work just fine for my application.

The first barrel length on the .270-06 IMP was 30". Cut it to 26" as it was to hard to extract it from a saddle scabard. Never had the opurtunity to shoot it over a chronograph. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! George Nonte made what became the 240 Wby by swaging 30-06 brass down, and swaging a belt on it.

I have a 6mm Rem AI. Can't think a 6-06 would better it by much and its easy to do. I shoot 68gr Bergers at 3950fps. I've no idea what a 100gr.would reach as twist is 1 in 14. It is a true 1/4 to 1/3 moa rifle. Just another idea.
