This past Tuesday, he was chasing a doe with loving on his mind. Who says a .240 won't work on deer? 100 gr. Hornady, 50 gr. Reloader 22, dropped him in his tracks.

Fantastic kill with a great caliber. I love my 9 lug MkV 240. Free men should not be subjected to permits, paperwork and taxation in order to carry any firearm. NRA Benefactor

Actually, I've never known one to say that. It's a wonderful cartridge for deer. Yours is a beauty too!

And brings home the bacon. Six lug Weatherby, I love this gun.

Nothing wrong with the 240Wby. I worked up loads for a guy in his rifle with a 24" I was burning 10grs more powder for 50fps over my 6mm. Might have been the rifle or the barrel length. To me a 243, 6mm 240Wby are all deer killers. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Very Nice!! I love to see Weatherbys bloodied! Did you take him from that stand behind you??

keithv35: Yes, that is the stand I was sitting in. I thought it would make a neat picture to have the stand in the background. Would have been better to have a friend take the same shot with me sitting in the stand, but I was hunting alone.

lastrofthebreed: I shoot the 6mm-06. A 28" heavy barrel Pac-Nor on a 700 Action. Not a walk about rifle, as it is heavy and I built it for 400+ yard shots. With all that said, I wouldn't hesitate to take a deer, like the nice one you shot, just about anytime, if I could get set up for the shot. 6mm's are fine deer cartridges, as proved by your 2 nice critters. I recently acquired a 6 lug Wtby UL in 338-06..really like that action..weighs 7lbs even with a 3-9X Leupy on board....shoots well too....I'd like to find one in 280,...but a 240 has been on my mind lately too....just for something different...a 100gr TSX would do for any deer at sane ranges.... nice goin'

This is my experience as well. The .240 Weatherby is marginally better than the 6mm Remington. But it sure gets the job done. I just might have to add it to my "make" list as it's a great deer cartridge. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I had a 240 WBY made Donor action was a Rem 700 25/06 stainless Shilen 26" barrel Mcmillan stock Leupold VXII 4-12X I had it made for long range coyotes and it is stellar for that. Also have shot half dozen antelope with it. I am a fan. NRA Patron member

I was all set to buy a .240 in the UL. Wanted one for years. Then I discovered that the 25-06 is a ballistic twin to the .240 and 25-Oh brass is a heck of a lot cheaper. So I ended up with a 25-06 UL. Love it!!! But I still get the .240 itch every now and again. I guess it's "the only one on the block" syndrome. I do still have a Daly Mauser action that needs to be someting other than a 30-06. CONGRATS on a very nice buck!!! Founder....the OTPG

Strut: Yes, there is something to be said for having something nobody else has. I get a lot of "What did you say you shot him with? I've never even seen one." 'Course, I hunt with my Mark V .257 Wby Mag on occasion - really like it when I am anticipating a long shot - we hunt some clear cuts that can stretch almost any gun, caliber combo!!

ramrod340: Same caliber + larger case = less efficient cartridge as you most likey know. A 6.5/06 Improved take 6% more powder with same bullet to get the same vel. as the 6.5/06.

This is not at all surprising as the .264 Magnum case does very little more than the 6.5-06 and with quite a large increase in powder. Efficiency however isn't something I (or many folks) care about....we're looking for performance.....and must fight with the laws of diminishing returns. It seems serious diminishing returns with both 6mm and 6.5 mm start after we want to improve on using the 7 X 57 case.....We'll pour in a lot of powder to improve on the 6mm Remington and the 6.5 X 55 cartridges!....(I think it's a sickness ) /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Really??? Sorry dealing with a know it all step son this week. Yes I'm well aware. That was the purpose of my comment. The 240Wby requires over 10grs more powder to give marginal gains at best. Call it poor efficiency, overbore whatever you choose. Anytime you have a larger case you will need to burn more powder to just reach the same velocity level. Hopefully the larger case will allow you to use enough slower powder to create enough energy to get a higher velocity. For me a case the size of a 6mm case pretty much hits it on the head for a 6mm if I felt I had to go bigger I would go 6mmAI. In my young and very foolish early days of wildcatting I built a 240PDK call it a 240 Gibbs+. All I created was a waste of powder and a good barrel. I was burning 12-14grs more powder than a 6mm to get about 80fps. A 6mmAI would have given me the same velocity with far less powedr and damage to my barrel throat. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Ive hunted with a 25-06 for the past 16 years without complaint, but have always wanted a 257 WBY. Ive always been a fan of the quarter bores.
