I know how to determine it, but if somoene knows... Anyone know the twist rate of the .223 barrel on a Savage24V. It is the over under 20 guage bottom .223 on top. It is all wood not the second run synthetics from the late 80's. (Not certain of the exact time frame) With the cost of factory ammo I was going to load for it, but wanted the optimum bullet weight to the twist.

Mine is a very early one and it has a 14" twist the same as the .222 24V. I've heard they changed to 12" twist but don't know. It's not hard to measure with a cleaning rod and a tight fitting patch. At any rate all bullets up through 55 gr shoot very well in mine. Larry Gibson

Thats the method I was going to use, Patch and Rod, but I was trying to be lazy. I was going to try some 50 grain Blitz's I have. So they should work fine with either twist. The heaviest I would shoot would be 55's. Thanks for the info Larry.

Earl 26 gr of H335 under a 55 Hornay SX is a very accurate and deadly load on varmints. They run 3135 fps out of my 24V. I use military cases with CCI 550 or WSR primers. I full length size and since I started using a RCBS X-die I haven't had to trim any cases. The old Speer blunt noe 55 gr FMJ over 16 gr of H4895 at 2070 fpps was a very good small game load that caused minimal meat damage. Als they do not make it any more so I use a cast Lyman 225438 over 5 gr of Unique for 1650 fps. Larry Gibson
