For some reason I have a hankering to get a 6.5x284 and am wondering if anyone other than Savage is chambering this round in a factory gun. The savage 12F is just one ugly rifle in my opinion as I just can't stand the 2x6 butt stock on it. I have a couple REM 700's in 7SAUM that I was considering taking one of and having it redone to the 6.5x284 which might be just as cheap in the end than paying $1k plus for the Savage.

I have a Rem-700 SA in .308 and tried feeding the .284 case through it recently....it seemed to work fine.....and if you had a .260 Rem in the M-7 I think all you would need is a ream job on the chamber....that reamer is fairly common.

Any SA Rem will do but the .260 will allow one to salvage the barrel.

The bolt head on the SAUM is larger, that could be a problem. I wanted a 6.5x284 on my M700SA, but the action/magazine is really too short for anything but light wt. bullets, otherwise you have to deep seat or feed them single shot. Nope, if you are going to do it right, use a std. length action & you'll have much more flexability.
Oh, I went w/ the 260ai on my M700SA. Shoots great! I get groups in the 0.3s & 2850fps w/ a 142grSMK from the 27"bbl.

I know a couple of guys who have 25-284's on short actions, and haven't heard any complaints about the rifles from an action length point of view.
For the last few rifles I've had built, I look at what bullet I'll be using, and let that dictate what action length to use, so loaded rounds fit the magazine, and feed properly. And, so bullets don't have to be seated deep in the case as Fred mentioned.

Where the 6.5X284 really shines is at longer ranges. In order to achjeve the longrange accuracy potential, the longer, sleeker bullets are used. This does present some OAL problems in a SA. Not many of the 257 cal. bullets are as long as the LR 6.5 bullets. The 25X284, by the way, is a fantstic deer/antelope cartridge.

My point exactly. You can't fit that into a M700SA unless you single feed or modify the mag/box & then that only gets you to 3.00".

Thank you for that information.....it seems the long action is required then.....I was of the impression one could simply seat bullets deeper... but .31 deeper a way too much!

vapodog,
On an Australian forum recently, the results of a T3 Varmint in 6.5x55 rechambered to 6.5/284 were presented. Rifle was test fired by a well known benchrester here and 0.3MOA groups resulted. The single-stack feed makes feeding easier, only drawback is the 24" barrel.
Cheers...

Actually, if you use a reamer that isn't designed as a match reamer (with the long throat) I know of several that have rechambered short actions .260s to 6.5x284 without any problems. The only restriction is you can't be shooting 142 SMK, but 120-130 hunting bullets work fine.

Probably not much help if you are looking for a cheaper gun, but Blaser chambers the R93 for the 6.5-284.

Thanks for all the info. I actually picked up a Rem 700 in 30-06 today pretty cheap so from what you are saying this action would work better than the SA.

Now ya gone and dun-it.....that thing will also handle the 6.5-06 as well as the 6.5-284

If you look in the right place '06 brass is available by the bucket full....and a great cartridge..... clap

My 6.5-284 is built on a mauser action and the intermediates are about perfect length for that. My 6.5-06AI is on a standard Model 70 action and that is the way I would go with the standard action length. If you wanted to, you could always switch back to 30-06, or something on that case, later.

good point Larry.....the 6.5-284 might require some feed rail work and this would make it difficult to revert back to cartridges using the basic .30-06 case.....and the 6.5-06 is at least the equal of the 6.5-284....to me it looks like a slam/dunk!
