any problem firing 22 shorts in rifle chambered for long rifle? i've got a mental image of the bullet jumping out to the far end of the chamber before the rifling starts and leaving shaved-off lead behind. just an over active imagination? thanks, R

continuous (like for centuries) use in this practice is said to slightly crater the LR chamber at the length of the short case. I'd do it.

I do it all of time in my Remington 552 Speedmaster. You have to give it a good cleaning after each shooting session. Once I shot 2000 shorts before cleaning the rifle and it wouldn't chamber long rifles any more. My gunsmith had to take it down and really give it good cleaning. After a while it makes a .22 short chamber. "Big ears doesn't make you a good listener, but big feet will tell on you." - Mr. Bill Clinton

I have a Winchester 94/22 that has problems chambering shorts, I have to take it slow. I have a Winchester 62A that shoots them with no problems. Some autos have trouble with them jamming but if you want to shoot shorts in your LR chambered rifle or handgun, go for it. Recoilpad is right, if you fire a bunch of them you’ll probably need to clean your chamber before using LRs again. That’s no big deal, just clean your rifle.

I shoot shorts for fun and practice with kids all the time.....never a problem... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." There is no safetly issue. There may be a cycling issue if dealing with a semi-auto rifle/pistol. Accuracy will suffer. Tight chambers are more accurate. CISSP, CISA, CRISC looking for a IT Security/Audit Manager spot

Many magazine fed 22lr rifles have trouble feeding Longs, shorts, or CBs from the magazine. You may have to use your rifle like a single shot if that is possible. There are quite a number of older rifles that will handle all three. The cleaning recommendations are probably not a bad idea. ******************************************************* For every action, there is an equal and opposite malfunction.

IMO that's what they make 'em for. I suppose there may be some somewhere (ie a carnival), but I do not remember ever hearing of a chambering for .22 short. Of course, there's a lot I don't remember these days.

If you want a quieter round to use and don't like chambering shorts in your long rifle chamber then try some Aguila Super Calibri as these are lower power and very quiet. Rodney.

I have seen a 22Short rifle at the range. It was old. It was a pump. The owners were trying to feed it 22LR. It didn't function with 22LR. CISSP, CISA, CRISC looking for a IT Security/Audit Manager spot

These slow .22 lr "Z" gallery or room loads are available from RWS, Winchester and others and use the lighter .22 short's bullet. They do not carry propellent, only the primer, make little noise but are still pretty precise until 50 meters or so and do not generate the cleaning issue.

I remember some Winchester 62s chambered for the 22 short. They were used in shooting galleries and parlors. I remember seeing a few of them in a rack for sale many years ago. Used guns that were shot out (the barrels weren’t shot out, the actions were falling apart though).
