Hi all. I have ordered this from my LGS. Anyone shooting with the 17 Hornet? Any caveats? I can't easily get US powders here, so I'll be using Aussie ones - equivalent of H4227 / H110 and H4198. Any advice gratefully received. -- Promise me, when I die, don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told I her I paid for them.

Those CZs in 17 hornet have a reputation for very good accuracy and a power level more than adequate for rabbits and foxes out to 150 plus yards.

I have been shooting the 17 Ackley hornet for years. different pea from the same pod. nice little well mannered cartridge if you can get good brass. years ago when Kimber in OR. made rifles for it a fellow named steve timms wrote the owners manual. he found out what Ackley suggested years ago. fill up the case with 4198, seat a bullet and go kill things. obviously I worked up to that level in .2 grain increments but didn't run into pressure issues with hornady 25 jhp bullets. never killed a rabbit or fox with it but woodchucks, weasles, grackles, and crows within 150 yards were in trouble.

i've been playing around with the ackley hornet a bit. it is a nice fairly quiet round. very cheap to load and quite effective on small stuff. loads of fun getting into a flock of blackbirds with loading date lists lil gun and i know many are using it, but i found it very erratic

I've used a couple .17 Ackley Hornets built on Thompson-Center TCRs starting around 15 years ago. To me they seem to be adequate for coyotes out to 150 yards and fox to past 200 yards. I am getting 3650 fps with Hornaday 20-grain bullets. A .17 Hornet would be about the last gun I would part with.

I have a CZ 17 Hornet. I used it last spring on gophers and a couple of crows and magpies. The crows and magpies were 200 yds. They think they are safe at that distance . If you shoot .223 at that distance the noise will scare off any other birds. With the 17 the noise factor doesn't bother them and they go over to check out their departed brother and you can pick out a second bird right away. Gophers are lifted 4 to 5 feet off the ground and finished. Sight your rifle in 1" high at 100 yds. and it will be 0 at 200. So you can shoot with no holdover just beyond 225 yds.Ricoches are virtually non existent. I have shot at one pint milk jugs and the bullet disintegrates without touching the back side of the container (20 gr.Vmax). I usually carry up to eight rifles to shoot gophers. Last year I only used two the 17 H and 22Kh. If I had more 17 ammo thats probably the only one I would have used.

I'm considering one myself and have read many great reviews of the cartridge. I think I'm leaning towards the Ruger rifle though. "Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars."

Think of it this way: What the 17HMR does at the muzzle the 17 Hornet does at @200yds. With a muffler on it is a joy to shoot without earmuffs!

It doesn't sound like the 17 has enough poop for me to use on a trapline. I tend to use more than enough gun

How much gun do you want? It holds @14.6 grains of water so it is a very small case. That said: 20gr V-MAX at 3700fps for 600ft-lbs using 10 grains of powder. Now that's not to shappy! A 22LR will do @135ft-lbs at the muzzle that is 400yds out for a 17 Hornet!

I need a bullet that will kill a wolf or wolverine cleanly at 200 yards! I tend to use more than enough gun

They sure can't handle wind, and Idahos Snake Canyon is always windy as is the Owayee desert, The require a new set of cleaning tools and they sure do foul badly and quickly.. Tried one and dumped it pronto, went back to the 22 calibers and better yet my 6x45 and 250-3000 for my hunting conditions. It's an RRP - the price is normally less, but it gives the dealer wriggle room. -- Promise me, when I die, don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told I her I paid for them.

Got it for over $300 off that price, which is pretty good, considering the 10% sales tax and the extra we pay just for living in Australia - here, even electronic crap, like iTunes seems to cost more than a direct conversion from $US. I'm happy - got a Tasco 6-24x40 varmint scope for it off Fleabay and it should be good to go. -- Promise me, when I die, don't let my wife sell my guns for what I told I her I paid for them.

Well don't believe the old tale about a 17s fouling easy. I an not saying you can't get a bad barrel. I have had a total on one that fouled from the start. I would shoot until the accuracy was slipping and then treat with JB. I did this until I could shoot 50 rounds. that same barrel now goes 2or 3 hundred before we get misses prairie dogn. We shoot 5 different 17s with no fouling problems. We have been shooting the Ackley hornet for eight years. We shoot up to 250yd prairie dogn. All of our rifles are CZ 527 factory barrels. I rechambered the AH factory barrel to HH and it shoots factory loads very good. The wife claimed that rifle and I rechambered so she could by factor fodder. Kenny
