When buying any product where precision is expected, wouldn't it be nice if the manufacturers of these goods would disclose what those +- tolerances are so that we could make a more informed decision about buying their product BEFORE the purchase is made???????

What are we talking about ?

Chambers ?

They are specified in SAAMI and the use of go / No Go gauges.

What else were you thinking about ?

heck if ruger had to publish there accuracy tolerances theyd probably never sell another bolt rifle. I had a 257 roberts i sent in because it wouldnt shoot anyting better then 3 inch at a 100 yards and they told me there criteria for accuracy says that if a bolt gun shoots 3 inch at 50 yards its exceptable. I told them ive got 3030 winchesters that do that at a 100 yards on a bad day with open sights!!!

Bo Clerke once told me that Ruger's Acc. standards were 3,4,5. 3 shots in 4 inches at 50 yds.

Ruger told me over the phone that their standard for a varmint model #1 rifle was 1 1/2" at 50 yards.....and that's all mine would do!

Other side of the coin, I've never been around a Ruger that wouldn't shoot, some right out of the box some with some bedding tweaks but nothing that gave me any head aches.
My gals M77 Ultra Light .257 Roberts shoots .5" at 100 yards for 3 shots, right out of the box.
My brothers .458 shoots 3 shots overlapping about everytime we shoot it.
I happen to like them Rugers but I'm a bigger Winchester fan.

Had a friend in Oklahoma that bought a new Ruger heavy barrel 308 back in the 80's. He put a T 16 Weaver on it the dang thing wouldn't shoot any better then 1 inch groups at 50 yards with match ammo and match bullet reloads. Took it to my shop and we cleaned the bore real good and I slugged it and it was .3095. He sent it back to Ruger and it came back in about 3 weeks with a note saying the barrel was within factory tolerances.

Funny another poster mentioned 257 Roberts as another friend had the other 25 caliber Ruger, the 25-06 and it wouldn't shoot. Groove on it was .258 something.

I've heard that Ruger has since cleaned their act up.

1 1/2" @ 50 yds is unacceptable for any weapon let alone a varminter, that should by rights be a real shooter. Several locations I use for woodchucks I want and can expect most shots to be in excess of 400 yds. At 1.5" for 50 I'd be lucky to ever hit one.

I have found variations in Coopers, Rugers and Remingtons I have measured. I had two coopers in 17 Squirrel and both chambers were oversized messes.

Weatherby used to have an accuracy guarantee on some of their models. the rest are a bit hit and miss.
