308 Win. or 250-3000

I've got this great little short action here, but can't decide what to make on it. 308 Win. or 250-300? Something in between? Got a couple Obermeyer 30 cal barrels on hand, basically extras. There's a Shilen 257 xx #3 contour. A 6.5 lothar and 7mm Lothar to choose from. 22-250 is out, already have 4 of those. I'm thinking 308 Win with one of the Obermeyer barrels. I wonder if a 308 Win could hit 2900 with a 165 from a 26 inch barrel or at least 2850. The action is a Grisel, it took me about 10 years to swing a deal on one but I finally did it. It seems like sacrilege to even consider an action like this one wraped in carbon, but I think that's the way it's going.
Theroy being, good hardcore Mauser metal work. and a carbon stock for a no nonsense hunting tool. Open for opinion.

Gidday Timan,

That action would make the sweetest little 260 Rem around on that Lothar 6.5 barrel and oh so practical.

It was made for a 260.

Thats what I would want anyway.

cheersIf the 250-3000 will handle your intended game than that is the one I would opped for.If the magazine will permit you to seat the heavier bullets out so they don't infringe on the powder space than the .260 with a deep throat is also a reasonable choice. stirroger

Of the options available, I would go with the .308 Win. However, if I had a personal choice, I'd go with a .358 Win. in a neat 20" Mannlicher style and never look back. thumb

I'll second the 358 Win. or 260; however, if you're stuck on the first two, I would go with the 250-3000, but the AI version. Lou

Gidday Paul B,

Now you are talking dirty. A 260 with a pretty mannlicher stock is possitively pornographic.

It would be a perfect bush/woods/alpine hunting rifle.

I am getting incredibly excited at just the thought. As I said positively pornographic.

The 260 would be great but why not combine your desires?

Go with a 25 Souper which is the 308 necked down to 25 caliber.

Its a nice action and a custom rifle ... so why go mundane with a .308Win or 260Rem when you can walk in and buy one off the rack at any gunstore? My first choice would be a 250/3000, built as a walkabout varminter/deer rifle ... classy!
Cheers...

.308 is a fine caliber and about as close as you can get to the perfect whitetail caliber. If you don't already have one than it would be a good choice. If it were my action though, I would go .250 in a heartbeat. A light .250-3000 would be a pleasure to both shoot and carry and like Con said, you won't find one on the rack at any gunstore.

don't know what you plan to shoot with the rifle, but any of the rounds based on the .308 would be great. I would like a .260 but a 308 or a 7mm08 would be fine too.
I would not recomend sticking such a long barrel on a short action rifle though. If you want velocity, go for a 260 and shoot 125 or 130 grain bullets.
In a short action I think a 22 inch suits me real well. I would be all over a model 7 Remington 1n 260 if it had a couple more inches of barrel.
And I would go with blue steel and wood. If you want a utility rifle just buy one, If you are gonna do a custom, make it prety...tj3006

For a no nonsense general purpose hunting rifle a 308 or 7mm08 makes the most sense but others have noted you can buy sensible rifles OTC. For a nice light deer rifle the 250 Savage would be fun, especially if the barrel you have will handle a 115-120 gr bullet. I'd stock it in wood though...

Timan, what a wonderful conundrum you fine yourself in. A a pleasure to be dragged in with you. One thing you don't mention and I feel bares heavily on the question is what your favored style of rifle is. Would it be in a tradional Mauser/European configuration, or one of the mentioned Mannlicher stocked styles. (My choice by the way) Is your intended use of this rifle going to be hard hunting, or fine game shooting? The amount of "class" which the action exhibits would be lost to a plastic wrapper, not unlike the finer sensations which can be lost when using a "wrapper..."

Well to anser your question, either the .308 or a .260, nothing less will do.

cheers

Unfortunately you didn't say what your intented use is but if you'd consider a 250-3000, then I agree with 30378 that a 25 Souper would be a great short action round.

It's hopeless it think 250 it is, manlicher. No 260 yea that's it. Don't forget the 7mm-08 there's a real good one. 308? gee it's a real good killer. 25 super? naw not enough over a 250 to care. 260? how about a nice little 6.5, that would be fun, but for how long? But then you don't see 250s everywhere. It's hopeless. I think what I might do is put all these caliber choices in a hat and draw one out and what I pull out is what I'll build. Same with the overall design of the rifle.

Gidday Timan,

Thats a bloody good idea. With those options you are going to come up with a winner no matter what comes out of the hat.

Let us know what you come up with eh!!

Limiting my answer to the choices you are asking about, 250-3000 otherwise it would definately be a 257DGR.

I think Con said it first and said it well! A custom .250 AI, in a lighter FW style would quietlt screem class.

.260's, .308's ect are just to mundane. The only other choices mentioned that interest me are the Souper and DGR, or Durahm Jet for that matter. But your guidlines were around two choices.

What twist barrel is the .257? That could be an incredibly sweet little rifle. Nate
