The wind has finally quit blowing so I took the swift to the range to finish load development.
This rifle is a Savage 12fv action,SSS trigger,
26" 1 in 12 twist varmint weight E R Shaw barrel
and Nikon glass 5.5X16 Monarch.
The final load is a heavy dose of IMR4064 and a
60gr V-MAX. The load chronographed 3745fps(avg.
for 5 shots. After sight-in my first 5 shot group was .512" at 100yds.
I'm hoping that will shrink when I go back fresh. Old hands and old eyes struggle after 10 or so shots trying to "hold just so".
What do you think? Is it a keeper?
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

Definitely a keeper.
I have a 22-250 and used to load for a friend with a 220 Swift. We would make consistent hits beyond 400 yards. Gotta love the 22's.
Let us know when you shrink those groups.

It's a keeper. It took years of load work to get mine down to .75" I think mine must have a slower twist than yours because it won't shoot anything over 55 Gr. and at those velocitys most bullets won't hold up for accuracy like your getting.

I ended up shooting 50 gr Barns x because I figured they would hold up, Seem's to have worked going fron 1&1/2 with 55 gr. v max to 3/4 but I would rather be shooting what you are with those results.

The Jigger--A .512" group might be marginally acceptable some places. But in Florida with the possibilities of alligators, that giant size group would be very dangerous. That would make it a total non keeper. In the interest of your safety and well being, I'd make a sacrafice and give it a home---send it on--you can PM me for shipping details.

The Jigger---After making my offer to relieve you of the burden of that .220 Swift, I did some research. I had thought about maybe using it on deer. I now know, after reading several posts by Hot Core, that it would not work, unless there is a 25 pound sledge hammer that goes with it. Shipping on the sledge and the gun would ruin the deal so I regretfully have to rescind my offer---sorry I couldn't help.

Roll EyesThat group size is not the measure of the rifle alone. Components ,scope, conditions and shooter enter in somewhere. The total combination seems rather great to me. Nice shooting. beerroger
PS. Something good seems to be happening at Shaw barrel.

I've owned two swifts....a custom Mauser and a heavy barrel M-70.....neither of them shot that well!!!!

Thanks for the responses.
Bartsche, E R Shaw says their barrels are not "bench rest" quality. Maybe thats true; but for an old "cracker" boy this one seems to be close.

I might as well jump in here, because the Swift is one of my 3 most favorite cartridges, the 270 Win and the 35 Whelen being the others.

I would be very happy with .5" groups, it may do better, but I don't believe you'll need it. Like one of the other guys, my Ruger 77 Tang Safety dosen't like bullets heavier than 55 grain, but man with 38RL15/55Ballistic Tip, they are one bug hole for three shots. The barrel is a replacement Ruger put on in 1995 after I shot out the original 1974 barrel.

As to ER Shaw, I have 2 rifles they have barreled for me, a 35 Whelen, excellent very accurate, and a 6.5-06. The 6.5 is, well not as good, I am being nice! I spent bucks on this one making it shoot, and when I can afford to mess with it again, I may rebarrel it. I talked with the Shaw guys at the NRA show in Phoenix last year, and they seem to want our business, and are willing to pay attention to detail. That said, if I wanted a target rifle, I'd go else where.
