I was reading through the classifieds today and found a 6mm in an old Remington BDL varmint special with an old Weaver v900 scope. So, what do you guys think it's worth????

The guy said the wood was in good shape with a few scratches and the barrel and receiver looked like they were "parkerized". Anybody familiar with such finish on 700's?

What is the barrel life on the 6mm?

He was asking $425 for the whole thing.

The 6MM rem is a great varmint round and if the gun hasn't shot 5,000 rounds it could be still in good shape. Very few of these guns have shot out barrels. Usually it's the prairie dog shooters that shoot so much and so long that they erode the throats badly. The price is reasonable if you like the scope and if you look for erosion of the throat in the barrel.

Buying used varmint rifles is always a risk because they can be shot out.....I'd venture very few ever are shot that much.

Rebarreling can be expensive including rebluing so it's not something to overlook.

All the BDL heavy barrel rifles had a gloss finish. They made a heavy barrel rifle matte finish in a laminated stock he could of shot the orginal barrel out and got a new matte take off from someone. I kind of buy one like that figuring I may have to rebarrel and if it shoots that much better. I think the price is right even if only for a future project.

I haven't got to see the rifle first-hand, just going off what the owner had to say. I don't have anything in a 6mm right now, so thought about offering $375 without the scope. I usually prefer savages in varmint guns, but thought it might be nice change.

So what is it worth assuming 90% condition?

SHow him 3.5 bills and if he takes it, you got a deal!! Scope and all!! If he haggles, and you have to pull another 25 out, you still got a deal!! And even if you have to dig and bring out another 50 you're all right!! I killed a boatload of groundhogs with a .243 scoped with a WEAVER V-9 and then put the scope on a VARMINT SPECIAL in 22-250 and killed a couple boatloads more!! The barreled action will fit "just right" in a "VS", H-S Precision stock that show up on here from time to time for $100-$140. Go get the rifle!! Must not have been in my local paper today cause you wouldn't have the chance to go get it!!! GHD

Considering you may be able to get it cheaper, buy it.

Thanks for the input. The gun is 3 hrs away so I might wait until the weekend. Figure if he still has it by then, I'll be able to get a pretty good deal on it. He's only shot it 3 times, but not the original owner. I live in the south, so probably not used for any pdogs and predict very few rounds down the tube.

I don't have a current use for a 6mm, but got room in the safe if the price is right.

I'd grab it and keep it. I have to look into the 6mm soon

I just purchased a new Remington VLS heavy varmint rifle in 6mm Rem. It shoots pretty good, but I'd venture to say no better than the heavy barreled Remingtons from the '70s and '80s, and this new rifle cost me twice as much as the price you mentioned. The 6mm Rem is an excellent cartridge and not too many companies are chambering it today. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Best wishes.
