For a while Sako made L461 and A1 sporters in 6mm PPC. They might do the trick? Our very own "1894mk2" has (or had?) one of those rifles. Cooper sells current production rifles in 6mm PPC.

- mike

P.S. I should say: it is possible there were also other Sako models made as 6mm PPC sporters - 491, maybe??

P.P.S. If you get a Sako factory 6mm PPC, beware of using necked up Lapua .220 Russian brass, unless you turn case necks.

I have nothing against a 6mm PPC as a walking rifle but would a 6 X 45 be much different? Simply convert any .223 rifle!

For a nice light walking around rifle, I would consider any donor Remington 700,40-X, or 722 action, with a barrel chambered to 6 BR...that way one can find a common, inexpensive action, and not even any bolt face mods are required.

Or, if a guy just HAS to use a cartridge that has won the Super Shoot in benchrest, chamber it for the modified 6 BR case...the 6 m/m TallDog. F. Hasecuster won the Super Shoot about 10-15 years ago using that chambering.

I've got one in a composite stock on a Remington 722 action with a Jewell trigger, and it is an accurate son of a gun. (I also use it as a switch barrel gun in various cartridges up through .308, so it is handy in that respect as well.)

Close, a 6mmBR Norma Blaser R8 Professional with the 22.7" semi-weight fluted barrel. Good out to 1K if you can hold them that hard.

The PPC case is a nice basis for a lightweight hunting rifle.

I may have sinned.....but, long ago, I rebarrelled a Sako 6PPC lightweight hunter rifle into a 17PPC, for heavy bullets. A good coyote rifle.

I think you are on to something that's a good idea. The PPC cartridge is a better basis anytime, than the 223 necked up.

I'm having a Ruger action rebarreled in 6.5 Grendel. It was a factory rifle in 6mm PPC, but I bought just the action, with no barrel or stock. I'm going to make it relatively light with a regular contoured sporter stock and #3 barrel contour.

I was very pleased with the action for several reasons. I had never seen one of the Ruger factory PPCs so I didn't know what to expect for sure. Of course it has a block in the magazine and a short follower - I expected that. It also has a trigger that's crisp - more of a target type trigger, and the face of the receiver was obviously given extra attention to ensure squareness, and the lugs lapped to make good contact. I didn't expect that from a Ruger factory rifle.

I have another 6.5 Grendel in progress on a mini-mauser, which I initially bought as just the action. It has the 7.62x39 bolt face and magazine and follower. It should turn out to be much lighter and slimer than the Ruger. This mini-mauser has been in progress a long time, and it's looking like the Ruger will be in service first, although I started with it only a few months ago.

The 6mm PPC is a fine choice. I just think I'll prefer the 6.5 Grendel, which I think will be near or better performance as the 257 Roberts. I just like the idea of using 6.5mm bullets in 120 - 125gr.

Had a Sako delux sporter in ^ PPC. Had it rebarrels to 22PPC.
Could not get the accuracy that a 6PPC should produce.
The 22PPC shoots very good.

I did nearly that, except I went 6X47 on a Stevens 200. I wanted to save my .223 brass for my .223. Plus I just wanted to be different. Wink It may not be as accurate as the PPC cartridge but it still kills things beyond 300 yards with boring regularity. I just wish there was better .222 RM brass available.

As MHO states I have the Sako AI 6mm ppc in sporter repeater configuration (the rarest).

As it comes from the factory (not free floated with pressure point) it shoots factory Norma 70gr into a ragged hole. With a matching scope it is a true joy to shoot, so much so I bought another.

They appear on gunbroker occasionally and appear to fetch about $1300.

I made mine [6PPC] on a Win 70 223 that had a lot of feeding issues. It sports a Shilen 1-14 light weight barrel and a kevlar stock. I opened up the bolt face a bit to work the slightly larger case. The extractor was a no-sweat. It is "slightly" less accurate than my Browning 78 with a Hart bull barrel but a WHOLE lot lighter. Of course if I up-graded the glass to something better than the Redfield 3-9 it might shoot better but it is still under an inch and a lot more fun all-around. I had considered the 6X45 [or 47] but opted for the PPC because I got a bunch of Graf brass a long time ago and I have the dies too. This rifle has accounted for several coyotes but also a few of the Blacktail deer here as well as two cougar. This is a really nice package. Highly recommended.

My favorite walking around rifle is a Sako L-461 in a 6x45 (6mm/223) I get 3000 FPS with a 75 gr. Barnes X or GS Customs monolithic bullet (The Barnes bullet is discontinued but I have more than a few)...I custom stocked it in English style and it has a Leupold 2x7 compact. It weighs 5.4 lbs scoped, 18 inch barrel. It is also incredibly accurate mostly because it has a bench rest 0 tolerance chamber.

I have shot a ton of Whitetail and Mule deer,Pronghorn Antelope, African Antelope, rockchucks, coyotes and a few Kudu with it..It always does its job with carefull bullet placement in the heart and lungs, and those monolithics always punch through and I get a decent but not great blood trail, but good enough. Never lost an animal with it, and its a delight to pack around..

Sounds like a great little rifle. I talked with GS last year about some of there bullets. I was looking for a bullet that like you could get 3000 fps out of. I never tried the GS bullets but I did put a NBT into a pronghorn buck at 300 yards. There wouldn't have been any blood trail as it was a frontal shot and the bullet didn't exit. Dropped him pretty quick with the heart and lungs all messed up.

Not recommending this to anyone...just chucking it out there to stir some thoughts from some of you lurkers not posting on this thread yet.....

For several years in the 1980s my handly little "walking around" rifle was a pistol. Used it every year for Javelina in unit 23 for instance. Some years in Unit 32 also, for deer...

Was a T/C Super-14 Contender in 6 m/m TCU. Shot like a rifle, carried like a big pistol/tiny carbine (your choice).

Had/has a permanently mounted folding Harris bipod on it which made it really handy for sitting on the rimrocks overlooking Roosevelt Lake and a LOT of desert, and potting piggies 120 or so yards away as they came out into the morning sun from a cave I knew about. Had, and still has on it, a Burris 6x IER scope with a dot reticule. Pachmayr rubber grip and forend.

Only bad side was I had a couple of different game wardens come into camp on a couple of occasions, wanting to know who was shooting the rifle in HAM (Handgun, Archery, Muzzleloader) season. Had to fish out my gun and let them each shoot a round before they would believe that sound was from a pistol...

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Some years back I had a 6 PPC built in a light weight sporter configuration. The builder, James Hare used an XP100 action and a gain twist barrel with a tight .262 neck mounted with a Leupold 12x scope. He provided 50 cartridges loaded with 27.0gr of H-322 and Watson 62.5 gr bullets. It's the most incredibly accurate rifle I've ever owned. It would be hell on coyotes.
I'm now 80 years old and am thinking about selling it, but Haven't got a clue as to its value. James could really build a rifle~!!

I had the same idea a while back, but decided to ue my own ideas. I had/have a "million" 5.56 cases, but have never owned one, so I took all the commercial cases out of my "collection" and bought a short-action Howa. I have a 6.5 TCU reamer, so I bought a pencil-thin 1:10" barrel and a 1-4x Lyman variable and now have a little "walk-about" carbine. Mine has a 20" tube, but if cut off at 18" or so, could be quite handy.
Have fun,
Gene

Personal opinion is that in a lightweight carry rifle you will see little difference between a PPC an any .223 based cartridge. The difference is that really good actions that are really light and small are more easily found. I have built two for my daughters. A 6x47 (222Mag necked to 6mm) on a Sako L461 and a 6x45 on a Mini Mark X (which appears to be a direct copy of the L461).The Vixen weight about 5 1/2 pounds. The Mini with a 20" Douglas Number 1 contour and a really light fiddleback maple stock went 4 1/2 pounds. With two of the old Burris Mini scopes they were both really light and shot 1/2" to 3/4" groups. I ultimately set the barrel back on the Vixen and rechambered to 6x45. I had to load longer 6mm bullets deeper so there was little advantage of one over the other. It allows me to just load one load.

There is even properly headstamped brass available, probably easier to find than PPC right now. It is easy to just fireform a hundred cases from 223.

The big advantage is that the actions are tiny and keep the 223 bolt face. Once you cut for PPC you are stuck because these small actions won't do a bigger cartridge. I tried another action with a 250 Savage and never could get it to feed. Length was also a serious limit. That work makes me believe a 6BR could not work through the action except as a single shot. Going to a 6BR takes it to a whole other level of power (and weight due to the larger action).

I have both a 6PPC sporter (factory Sako A-I) and a 6x45 (custom Sako L461). But for a walk-about rifle for game, I much prefer my L46 with a very slender custom .300 Blackout barrel. It fires a 130 grain Hornady spire point (no longer available, I think) at 2170 fps; or a Nosler 125 Ballistic Tip at about 2200 or so. Did in a Texas feral porker with it at about 80 yards. It is light, handy, and carries plenty of "oomph" for light to medium game inside 200 yards.

I bought a Bergara ba13 in 300blk as my light weight hunting rifle, 33" long.
The only sour thing is 223r are not found on ranges in Sweden so I had to buy new Hornady brass 1,5$ each.

Ray, I like the idea of your walking rifle. I would build one similar as I don't have access to a Sako. I do have a Rem. 600 action though. I would probably chamber in 6X45 TCU or 6X45 AI I believe Barnes makes an 80 grain TTSX that's not far from your 75 grainers. The tip lets it open at lower velocity. It should also function well in a 6mmPPC. I don't know if a 14 twist would stabilize it though. DW

Have any of you built a varmint hunting bolt gun based on the new 6mmARC cartridge~?
My gunsmith is a competitive shooter in 800 and 1000 yard matches. He wins too.. He shoots a 6.5 Creedmore which based on his winnings sounds like a fantastic cartridge for long range varmint elimination.

dwheels,
The 600 would work just fine..Ive used 80 and 85 gr. bullets in my 6x45 and they work on anything in monolithic form..I also have a Rhiimaki L-46 clip fed Sako in the great .222 Remington, thats my Javalina an turkey gun, and its taken a fare share of deer at up to 100 yards, all one shot kills..

what is a walk about rifle, Ive always thought of it as a fwt. 222, 6x45 etc, but for years my favorite walk about varmint and deer rifle has been my Win. mod. 94 saddle rign carbine in 25-35 with a Lyman tang sight...It shoots 2 inch groups with most loads, 1.5 with one load...Its the berries to roll and old coyote or deer at 100 to 200 yards..or a rock chuck at 50 to 100 yds, or rabbit at 25 yards running...I miss a lot btw as I take all shots as they come..Great big game practice..I have even taken ckeanly a couple of elk with this little gun.

Just another approach to gun fun..

All my kids and grandkids killed or kill deer with a 222 rem in a Rem 600, cut the stock off several times and replaced the wood as each grew, that end is a patch work quilt,,A million dollor rifle to me..

My grandson is now 30 or so years old, and never occured to him a 222 isn't a fine deer gun. He is a cowboy. brand inspector and cattleman. if he was going to shoot an elk, he would take the 222 and go for a head shot...His only remark is Pop will me the 6x45..I will do that and the 25-35 also.....

How's 6 lbs with the scope. My custom 6mm PPC was built by Jas Hare some 40+ years ago. Built on an XP100 action, .262 neck chamber, gain twist barrel, topped with a 12X Leupold glass. With an ultra light trigger pull it shoots a 62.5 gr Watson over H-322 powder into one tiny ragged hole all day long~!!
I've never owned or shot another rifle this accurate and most certainly not in a walking around rifle~!

The second will get the same trial. I think I’ll plant 6x42 Leupolds on them if they hold tight, which I have every expectation that they will.
