Howdy and if this is in the wrong section, moderators, please feel free to move it. I pulled out my old Ruger M77, first year production serial 17xx in .243. For some reason, I ended up swapping scopes since I last shot it and went to re-sight. However, when I got to my shooting bench, I noted that my bolt would not clear the scope enough to eject a shell. Back to the (Work) bench !! I was going to change the mounts to HIGH Ruger mounts. When I got the scope and rings off, I realized that the rings were different heights and the intergral scope bases on the rifle were different heights. It appears that the rear ring was a Medium and the front ring was a LOW one. In all these years, I never had a reason to discover the different sized rings and assume this model had to be shipped this way because of the different heights of integral mounts. So happens I had a HIGH ring and a MEDIUM, so went back to mounting the scope. Have all model 77's always had different height mounts or was this changed somewhere down the road. If so, about what year? THANKS in advance, "Bo" ********************** Thank goodness my grandfather put me in the woods as a child ! www.TableRockAngler.com

My Ruger .243 varmint is about 3 years old and it has mounts that are of different height; highest in the rear. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

In most mounting systems----the rings are both the same hight. The Ruger bases are machined in the the the receiver rings-----if the receiver rings are different sizes, you need different height rings to properly mount the scope! Nothing wrong here, you just have to releize the proper way to set up the rings! MOST bolt actions have different sized receiver rings in the front compared to the rear. Hip

How do you edit a post here---I would like to clean up my VERY POOR spelling, if I can! Hip P.S. The front receiver ring is usually the bigger one as that one is the one that takes all the pressure!

Hey Hip, No problem with the spelling as you came in loud and clear. THANKS for the post. Heck, I was a public school teacher for 30 years and still can't spell worth a hoot. I figured out which ring goes where on my older M77 and re-mounted a scope in fine style. I was just surprised that as much as I have been around guns for almost 6 decades, and as long as I have had this rifle, I never realized that this particular Ruger (1968) had different height rings. The "Edit" button is a little photo of a pencil eraser in the lower right hand corner, or at least mine is there. Thanks, take care, and have a great weekend.
