16X....usually more power is unusable as the heat waves destroy any image after late AM

I once used a 6-24 scope but was never able to use much more than 14 power or thereabouts.

Totally agree. and too, you can use the lower power to spot the dog and then zoom in on him.

You can see a P dog staning on his hill at 500 yards with a 4x scope and not have to deal with heat waves..makes your aim more careful however, one must pay attention..I use 3x9s or 2.5x8s on all my varmint rifles. A 4x12 is about ideal IMO...those big scopes can handle my heart beat, they jump all over hell and back and heat waves are horrible in the high desert country..

I think most folks tend to over scope both on varmints and big game..

I'm with you Ray. I prefer low fixed power scopes for my hunting rifles. For years my go to has been a Leupold 4x. Simple, light weight, reliable and plenty of magnification for any place I'll be hunting.

I favor scopes with a lower magnification range. So my .270 Win and .300 Savage both have 2-7 Redfields and I put a 2.5-8 Leupold VarX-III on my .338 Win.

For my varmint rifles, I love the 4-16 Nikon Monarch on my Anschutz .17 HMR: I think its magnification range is ideal.

I do have a 6-18 Nikon Buckmaster on both my .223 and my .225 rifles but their magnification (on both ends) is a little more than I regard as perfect: otherwise they're great. (They were really cheap and I couldn't say no.).

Todd,
I realize the scope wiggles only so much with a scope of any power, but I don't see it and panic with a 4X or 6X...Same with iron sights, I shoot irons better than a scope up to 150 yards offhand, simply because the appear to be dead solid and I have a wonderful controlled jerk on the trigger! old

I thought we were talking about the 22-250 as a varmint rifle.
I'll be the first to say that the folks that put the high mag, big objective lense scopes on hunting rifles aren't doing themselves any favors, however, looking at a deersized animal through a 4x scope at 500 yards is a helluva lot different than looking at a pdog. And too, most of my varmint shooting is prone with a bi-pod so the scope shake is controlled somewhat. Also, practice, practice, practice will help you get rid of that scope shake.

Any truth to that? Also, what's a good coyote load for 300-yard shots?
