Anyone shoot any of these?

Your comments please... Big Grin

How's the trigger on the Weatherby?

Wifey is giving me the go ahead to grab me one!

Just looking for a utility grade rifle that'll be comfortable to shoot and accurate!

I enjoy my Savage 30-06 rifle but contemplating the Weatherby Vangard also as its pretty much in the same price range...

Thanks!

I'd opt for the vanguard. Never had one but have had several Howa (who make it). Savage makes a good rifle I've just never warmed up to the barrel nut.

As usual just my $.02

Maybe we should ask Tiger Woods!

Just picked up a Marlin XL 7 in 270..

my recommendation would be
Steven's First
Marlin Second,
Weatherby/Howa third..

whichever one you pick Roland, rest assured there is no 'wrong' choice among any of the three..

+1 to what Seafire said

My son's wife recently favored him with a Marlin XL 7 in 30-06 she picked up for less than $300.
I know this wasn't among your choices. However, after watching my son shoot this rifle at the range with a couple different handloads, its a value.

I have the Vanguard in 25/06. It and one Ruger #3 are the only non-Savage/Stevens rifles I own.
I bought the Vanguard for the 24" barrel in a sporter weight rifle. Savage doesn't make one.
The trigger, out of the box, was not satisfactory. After a spring change and some polish work it's fine at just over 2lbs. IMHO you need the 24" barrel for the 25/06.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

I also have a Weatherby Vanguard in 25-06.
I've dedicated it to shooting the 25 caliber heavy weight bullets, and I've gotten excellent accuracy from several of the 115 to 120 grainers. Excellent here means 3 shots into 1/2" groups at 100 yards. I used a Weaver V-16 set at 16x for load testing.
Also, the stock was glass bedded at the lug and the barrel free floated when I got it new.
I caved in on the trigger and just bought a Rifle Basix and installed it, rather than fixing the factory trigger.
Ain't no flies on a Vanguard. I also have a Vanguard in 223, just as accurate as the 25-06.

Scrap the 25-06 idea and get a 270.

I have a vanguard in 257 wby mag. It's a great shooter, sub moa with my handloads. I really like the rifle. The down side is the trigger was crap. It now has a Timney trigger in it and was worth every penny. The other down side is it's heavy. Mine's the wood stock, and the "sporter" weighs over 8 pounds, that's a lot for a "sporter" in my opinion (in a light caliber anyway).

I also have a couple of Savage's and a Stevens. The Stevens comes with a crap trigger. I used a couple of stones on mine to get the creep out, and adjusted it to just under 4 pounds. That was the best I could do with it (I'm NOT a gunsmith). The trigger is now shootable and I may or may not replace it later on. The Savages come with the "accutrigger". I like the new accutrigger, and will leave it as is on my field gun. Some like the accutrigger and some don't. I like it.

The Savage/Stevens "sporter" models are significantly lighter in weight than the Vanguard, like almost 2 pounds lighter. Both of my Savage sporters are synthetic stocks and that makes up part of the difference. Maybe your type of hunting the weight will matter, and maybe it won't?

If your Savage has the Accutrigger, you might consider buying a .25-06 barrel, wrench and go gauge and make yourself a switch-barrel rifle. Numrich has ER Shaw barrels for $160, fully finished and blued. That way you could try the caliber and see if you like it. If not, you could sell the barrel for near what you paid for it.

The neighbor kid bought one....it didn't last the first weekend of the deer season when it locked up due to the extractor malfunction.....100% not the fault of the ammo or the operator!

I would go for the Stevens. They're shooters, and a drop in pre-accutrigger savage trigger from any Savage page (sharp shooters supply has a supposedly GREAT trigger for like 85$) and you can put it on any stock made for a savage. So, 300 for the rifle, 100 for the trigger (says it can be installed yourself) and 100-200$ for a nice stock like a B&C, and now you're getting a rifle for 500$ that'll shoot like a dream and cost less then the upgraded Vanguard (with the same stock, its a B&C). It could be fun to put it together and customize it as you like.

Vanguard and the timney will set you back most likely 600+....so you still save 100$

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Agree.

Advantages the 25/06 has over the 270 won't be demonstrated unless you have a very accurate rifle.

In the practical sense of things the Savage is hard to beat but who ever said we were practical. Right? So in saying that I too struggle with the "uglyness" of the savage. They make a fine product but dang those things are fugly. lol

I would go Howa and before I ever put a round thru it put a Timney trigger on it. I've been told with enough work you can make the stock Howa trigger decent but you will probably have as much into tuning that stock trigger with your smith as what a Timney cost so I went Timney on mine.

Howa, Timney combo in a stock rifle is pretty hard to beat for the money and they look good too.

I did my own trigger tuning so it didn't cost a dime. Was prepared to get a Timney if things went sour but it now breaks like glass @ 3.4#'s.

I would go with the Vanguard. They just feel better to me than the Savage. I think it is because the stock fits me better and leads to better balance. I have a Vanguard Synthetic in .30-06 and had a .25-06 Vanguard Sporter a couple of years ago. The wood and finish was beautiful. Much better than I expected for a sporter model. The synthetic stock has a less cheap/hollow feel to it than the Savage stocks I have used. Triggers were creepy and gritty and immediately replaced with a Timney. I have heard Weatherby has improved the triggers since then, though.

I too, would opt for the Vanguard for the 24" barrel and easily replaceable trigger. I have a timney in my Vanguard Varmint Special. My Howa in 6.5x55 has the factory trigger, tuned as much as I was comfortable (no stoning or spring manipulation) and it is adequate, maybe, for a big game rifle. The Stevens is made awesome by adding a Rifle Basix trigger and Hogue recoil pad (like mine in .243), but I really think a 25-06 should have a 24" barrel.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.
