223 ammo varmits?

Guys I've been using plain Jane wolf hollow points.
They do ok. But looking for suggestions for a cheap round that expends energy more efficiently .
I don't want to spend a buck per round. Anything out there or should I just reload some soft points.

I've been buying remanufactured ammo from Freedom Munitions.
50 and 55 grain soft point ammo, reloadable Lake City brass. Runs about 37 to 50 cents a shot if bought per thousand depending on what bullets selected.
I've found this ammo capable of shooting slightly under 1" groups in a .223 Mini Mauser and a Heavy Barreled AR15. Seems to be consistent and blows Prairie Dogs up like they are supposed to.

I load 55 grain Hornady Z max and V max over 27 grns of Varget in my varmint rig but be aware this is a max load

Those sound like what I need. I reload a lot but usually only rounds that cost 3_5.00 dollars each.
I think the wolf ammo I have been shooting has a bi metal jacket or is just to heavy of a jacket for the desired effect. I'll look around and see what I can find.

Midway has Fiocchhi brand 223 loaded with V-max bullets in 50 gr and 40 gr for $21/50 rounds. These will give explosive results. The Wolf ammo you are shooting has a hollow point, but the bullet is not constructed as a maximum expansion type bullet.
Speer TNT, their 52gr HP, Hornady V-max, or SX, Sierra Blitz king or Blitz are all very good bullets for expansion.

Cast bullets. For some reason my .223 will not shoot cast bullets (bolt action) but my other .22 cals do great. Great jackrabbit round.

Thanks gentleman, I knew someone around here would steer me in the right direction. I'll give them a call, or Graf and sons they stock the same a few dollars more but their shipping is much more reasonable.

explosive results -- 50gr or lighter -- 40gr will be VERY spectacular, especially if top of the chart and a too fast twist barrel...

and, as i found out first hand, matchkings in the blackhills ammo, is VERY nice to rabbits, as they offer nil expansion and leave a very edible carcass

The Black Hills ammo can be found with a decent selection of lighter varmint bullets. It used to be very reasonably priced for both the new or remanufactured rounds. I shot a lot of it before I started reloading.

I've been buying Ultramax 55 gr soft points and reloading those cases with Hornaday 55 gr soft points. My AR won't feed hollow points at all(!) which I need to fix. They don't rate near as high on the chunder-creation index vs. hollow points but they can make some good gainers, twists, flips and chunk removal on prairie dogs! Cost is pretty good, under $.50/round with good reloadable cases.

Based on a "shoot off" I did last summer of .223 factory ammo (10 kinds), the one that shoots by far the best out of my Browning X-Bolt was the super-cheap Remington UMC green/white box 45gr HP. I picked some up at Cabela's not too long ago for 11.99 a box. For something that will put three shots into 3/4" at 100 yards, it's my go to choice.

Funny thing was - I tried some of the expensive Hornady Superformance ammo, and it shot by FAR the worst. Almost 2.5" groups!

It could be related to your twist ratio of your barrel. Is your Browning barrel a varmint contour?

I had the same result with my Bushmaster AR15 and was stunned!

Good question! I suppose I forgot to mention that. It's just a regular, sporter contour in an X-Bolt Hunter with the factory 1:12 twist. Certainly, anything heavier than 62grs is not happening (3"+ groups), but I don't have any desire to shoot those, so it works nicely.

I bought a bunch of IMI once fired brass from the gun club...The 223 IMI is the best brass I have ever used in any rifle, it lasts forever I guess, I'm still shooting it 10 years later, and all my 6x45 is on 223 IMI brass necked to .243..I have one test batch of 40 that's been reloaded 19 times so far with close to max loads, and still going strong, That's a dollar savior is ever there was one.

My other new favorite brass is PPU, it last forever in my 9.3x62, Its inexpensive and great stuff.

Guys I bought a 200 round batch of Fiocchhi 50 grain loaded with the v-max. They definitely make a good pop on a Jack rabbit. So far if there was a big enough piece of lead or copper jacket left after penetration to kick up dust after the hit I have not seen it. So far so good.

Just for general info....if you're in the market for a particular factory load, check ammoseek.com It could save you some money. Just saved me over $2/box on 20 boxes of some hunting .223 loads.

Just for kicks, I just checked the above mentioned .223 loads, would have saved $3.37/box 50 by buying from Bud's Gun Shop as opposed to current price on Midway. Not a big deal but every little bit helps.
