A long time ago I shot 22 rimfires into phone books to compare penetration and expansion.

Just from memory I recall something like this:

remington viper 8" riveted

solid round noses like federals
and remington thunderbolts 5"-6" many of these mushrooming nicely.

Remington yellow jackets 4" fragmenting

CCI Stinger 3"-3.5" fragmented.

Anyone else do something similiar with 22 rimfires?

The standard velocity loads give the best penetration acording to an article Jack Lachuk wrote for Guns and Ammo years ago. I had great penetration from a 22 using the Korean PMC plated round noses. I had to finish off a very mobile wounded deer with the gun I had in my hands at the time and 3 of those PMC bullets penetrated 15 inches or so in a Washington state Blacktail. I wasn't the original shooter, he used a 30-30.

Palidun--a deer shot with a 30-30 required a finishing shot? You sure it wasn't a .223?

I've found the standard velocity .22 rounds to be better than the hyper velocity ones. It may be that the pure lead bullet can't stand the higher speed.
I've found that the standard rounds are also more accurate than the hyper ones.

I get good results from Remington vipers. I eat squirrels, so hollow points are out. The wide metplat and high velocity really work well on fox squirrels at distance.

I found this website about penetration from many calibers including the 22 rimfire.

The CCI Mini-Mag which is slightly above std velocity comes in a 40gr lead bullet that does really well on penetration. It also comes on a 36gr HP but the 40 does much better.

I'd imagine the aguilla sss would be the winner, if you had a barrel with a fast enough twist to stabalize it.
