I've got a remington 700 in 270 that I'd like to rebarrel to a 264 win mag. This is prolly a stupid question but will it work in a 30-06 action?

You will need to open the bolt face for sure. Change out the extractor. Might need to swap out the mag box as well. The install a new barrel.

For my $$ I would sell my 270 and buy one of the new 700CDLs in 264. Wood stock with either a blue or stainless fluted 26" barrel.

As usual just my $.02

Good suggestion......or maybe consider rebarreling the .270 to 6.5-06....it's almost as hot as the .264 magnum!

I see absolutly no advantage to a .264 over a .270 as about all you get is more blast, smoke and noise..The .270 is simply the better round of the two...

I have both as a result of buying barreled actions for the actions. Both are accurate. Both deliver about the same stuff downrange. As folks have noted the .264 Win Mag generates more blast and noise.

Either is fine. One does not need both Wink unless one is a loaner.

First, I have learned to repect your opinions and your experience. And generally I agree with your positions.

And I love the 270 Win. Been using it since the '50's.

But, IMO the (handloaded) 264 IS better (meaning a little faster and a little flatter). IME,the typical 270 drives a 130gr bullet at about 3000+ (yes, I did have ONE which would push them at almoat 3150.). The 264 will drive a 125gr bullet, with a better BC at about 3300, without much problem. That's not an earthshaking difference, but is is as much as the difference between some of the other standard cartridges and their magnum counterparts.

(Yes, the 264 does better with a 26" bbl, but in the open country in which it shines, 2" or 4" more barrel dosen't really get in the way, IME.)

'Course, I'd also have to say that, IMO we could all get by with a lot fewer cartridges than we have available to us, if we had to. But I, for one, am glad we have options...it's been fun experimenting with many of them.

You have a standard and want to go with a 264 bore, I would strongly recommend the 6.5-06 or 264 HAWK. Just screw on a new barrel and you're done, preferably 26". I am a 264/6.5 fan and that's what I would do in a heartbeat. If I had an action with a magnum boltface, I'd definitely go with the 264... or 358 Norma mag. Big Grin Lou

I have to agree with Dr.Lou. I would just screw on a 6.5-06 barrel at 26" long and go from there. It will be cheaper, no modifications and you can always use 25-06 or 270 brass.

I just bought Cumminscowboy's 264 Sendero and I have a Pac-Nor stainless barrel I am now going to sell off. It is a Super match 6.5 #3 sporter x 8 twist x 30". Yours for $285 shipped. I think I paid $315 or $320 incl. shipping.

I'm with Ray on this one. To get any benefit from a 264 you need to go to a 26" barrel.
