Hi, I'm a hunter from 'down under' in New Zealand, I was hoping to hear from any of the guys in South Africa that are using their 6x45's
for taking medium sized game. I am currently using mine on deer the size of Sika and Fallow stags, and wanted to know what bullets they are using, and the typical performance of them on the game they are shooting.

Cheers

The Sierra 80 grain Single Shot Pistol bullet works beautifully in this caliber. I've used it to take quite a bit of game over the years in everything from Contenders and XP pistols to custom rifles. The Sierra 80 grain Blitz performs similarly, and the 80 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip is showing promise but has not totally proven itself to me yet.

From the higher velocities of a rifle barrel, the Speer 80 grain spitzer also performs admirably. The 6mm-.223 is a wonderful little round, and inside of 200 yards, it works well on medium game as long as you put the bullet where it belongs.

Allthough I wouldn't use them on sika or fallow, I have been VERY impressed with the 70gr hornady SP (NOT SPSX!).

I used about 20 on our smaller roe deer and was very impressed with expansion and penetration. Then I chronoed them - 3,500fps!

Given this velocity the fact that they can penetrate 12" after hitting the point of the shoulder is amazing - this they have done twice. They don't appear to seperate either allthough there's not a lot left.

In a slower cartridge such as the 6x45 (Max MV 3,100fps?) they would probably penetrate more.

Thanks, I have tried 70gn ballistic tips, 75gn Hornady HP's and 85gn Partitions in my rifle so far. Out of the 9 deer I have shot with it so far, only 2 were taken with shoulder/chest shots. All of the others were either head, neck or spine shot, hence I don't have much info re bullet performance. Of the other two, one was shot just behind the front leg with an 85 partition. It went through both lungs and out just in front of the off-side leg. He fell over after 20-25 yds, but I was not inpressed by the wound channel. It was relatively small. The other deer was a Fallow hind shot with a 70gn b-tip, doing 3000fps on impact. Unfortunately she was hit a bit far back (gut/liver? so is not a good example. The bullet blew to pieces, leaving the rear part of the jacket and a few fragments against the ribs on the off-side. Probably would have killed spectacularly if put in the lungs, but am a bit worried what would happen if a shoulder ar leg bone was hit?. I was thinking that a 90gn B-tip may be better, with its stronger construction, and slower velocity.
Has anyone got experience with "hunting weight"(85gns and above) bullets in this cartridge?, I would love to hear of your experiences

Hi 6x45fan

I started my 6x45 with Rhino 100gr bullets at +- 2400fps.Hunted impala and warthog successfully, did not retrieve any bullets but I think bullet construction was too strong with small entrance and exit wounds.Have since used 95gr nosler partition with great success, resulting in bigger entrance/exit wound channels. My daughter of 10 took a blesbuck two weeks ago and again no bullet recovery.

Cheers

Shooting a short barrel 243 with faster powders I used variously 100gr hornady RN and 95gr ballistic tip on fallow. The RN worked well, so too the 95grBT. Velocities were 2,500fps and 2,700fps respectively.

Now I use the 90gr BT at full 6mm rem velocity (3,200fps) and love them. I also use the 85gr speer BTSP which are very good too.

The 6mms are IMHO very unfairly maligned!

Thanks very much for the info. I think I will try some 90gn Ballistic Tips, as I think they will offer a good compromise between quick expansion and deep penetration. (at the speeds they will achieve in this small capacity case anyway)

I've killed several whitetail bucks with my 6X45 and Hornady SX 70 grain soft points.

Vapodog,

I was looking for a 6x45 and ran upon a 7x45 first and bought it instead. I think I still would like to try a 6x45 if I can find a carbine barrel for my Contender. The 7 TCU sure shows a lot of promise so far.

Do you really mean the Hornady 70 gr SX soft point? That is a really light jacketed varmint bullet that doesn't even make it down range in my hot .243 loads. At around 3200 fps it seems like it has a proximity fuse and explodes on contact on crow and fox, ect.!! Maybe much lower velocity allows it to be used on deer, but my experience with it in a .243 it that it really blows things apart on contact...hence the name SX or Super Explosive.

Just curious...what barrel length/twist does everyone find to be best for the 6x45?

Lowrider 49-
1 is 10 works best in the 6mm-.223 (6x45). By the way, the 7x45 is not the same as the 7mm TCU.

Bobby,

You're right...they are different, sorry.

1 in 10 twist seems to be what most are using. I guess you would have to pay extra to get a tighter twist, but 1 in 10 works on my .243s pretty well.

My 7 TCU is 18" long. Do you think a longer barrel offers any significant velocity gain? My thought is you can only burn so much powder in a .223 case and even slow powder is pretty well done burning in 18" to 20". My 20" AR varmint actually shoots about 50fps faster than the same round in my 24 inch, but there could be many variables there.

This particular case is quite efficient when topped with a 6mm, 6.5mm or 7mm bullet, and you are right that most powder will be burned in a barrel of around 20 inches. Longer spouts will add velocity, but it will be minimal -- at most perhaps on the order of 25-30 fps per inch. Granted, there may be individual instances in which the gain is greater, but on the whole, that 25-30 fps figure is going to be pretty close.

Yes.....at least that's what it says on the box.....SX...at 6 X 45 speeds it's a good 120 pound deer bullet.

I dont know if you can get them, but I just buy bulk 80 grn Rem bullets. I finally recovered one from a whitetail, it had a perfect mushroom shape and stayed together after going through broadside, then into the front leg which it broke and was under the skin.

Lowrider 49, I recently had the barrel on my 6x45 trimmed from 24 inches back to 18. Velocity loos was about 70 fps. Seems to me that somewhere in the 18 to 20 inch range is about right for this cartridge.

Thanks folks!!

I put 60 rounds of formed, but not fireformed rounds down range last night and they seemed to want to stay around an inch at 100 yds. I was letting the barrel cool between shots for awhile, but was running outof light, so I just shot 5 shot groups and waited 5 minutes or so between groups. As the barrel get hotter, it began to vertically string the groups from bottom to top. By the last group I was getting a verticle group one shot wide and 5 shots high.

Half of the loads were 115 gr Speer HPs and the other was Sierra game King 120 gr...each shot about the same POI and group. When I get the brass restuffed, I'll pull out the chrony and see what velocity I'm getting.

I'm still on the look out for a 6x45 carbine barrel in the 18" - 20" range.

Thanks again!!

I have a Sako Vixen in 6X45, 20" Lothar Walter SS barrrel. I have a silencer for it also.

I must say that I love this caliber, no recoil and little noise.
I havent shot very much game with it, a couple of minks, 1 fox, 2 beavers and roe deer buck.
Roe buck season start on wednesday 10.08 so I hope i well get a new buck then.

Shooting 55 grs Nosler BT at aprox 3200 fps and 90 grs Lapua mega at aprox 2600 fps.

What kind of actions do u guys use ?
What speed do du get with 95-100 grs bullets ?

Here it is, mounted with the silencer and a 40 pounds beaver I took with 55 grs Nosler BT at 150 yards this year.
It dropped stone dead, hit in the shoulder, no exit wound.

Dachsterrier,

Very nice rifle!!! Nice beaver too!!

I'm looking to put together a small carry rifle like yours, but without the supressor....we aren't grown up enough to have supressors here in the US without a note from our mother.

I'm looking for a barrel for my Thompson Contender, but the idea of using a Vixen action is pretty nice too.
