Just fired my first 500 yard groups with the new 30 grain Gold bullets made by us here at The Woodchuck Den. My first 4-shot group measured just a tad under 3 ( I forgot to click the scope up on the first shot ) my next 5-shot group measured 4 3/8 . These loads were running about 3800 f.p.s. which is not my full load in this 17 Javelina . The temperature was 49 F , slight breeze and thick heavy mirage ( the ground is cold and the sun causing heavy mirage boils ). I know I can do better when I get it running full tilt and under better conditions. You can post this if you like and tell Mr. Corbin Shell, make no mistake these 30 gr. Gold bullets do shoot fine to 500 yards!

Rifle: Custom Shilen short action

Stock: Claro walnut varmint style

Barrel: 1/9 twist Douglas 25 long

Brass: IMI 223 reformed to 17 Javelina

Bullet: 30 gr. Gold Varmint / Match

Powder: Hodgdon 4198

Primer: Federal match

Thanks Saeed,
Our new Seventeen Caliber 30 grain Gold Varmint/Target bullet has a .090 long boat-tail and a very streamlined #8 ogive which gives it a very high B.C.in the .280 range! Our first 3-shot group at 100 yards was a .100 and that was shot at 26 degrees! This was our first test at 500 yards, done very quickly (to test long range bullet stability) and I know once we get the max loads worded up it can do even better.
We are also introducing our new 17 Tactical cartridge in our spring issue of Small Caliber News. The 17 Tactical is based on a necked down and improved 223 and should move the new 30 gr. Gold bullets at 4200 fps! The 17 PPC should do even slightly more and we have a test rifle ready to go. We recommend a 1/9 twist which now is an industry standard.
This new 30 grain Gold moving at 3900-4200 fps puts it into the 22-250 Imp. or 220 Swift class and even exceeds them at high velocity WITH about half the recoil and noise!! The testing will continue but folks we have fould something very fun and accurate to shoot. Catch the Gold Fever!!! 30 grains of Gold !

To Todd Kindler,

I would like to invite you and anyone else who would like to shoot (sub calibers) at distance to our range in Butner NC. We have 50 firing points out to 1000 yards. We could have a special .17 caliber match. Most dates are possible. Let me know in advance and I can schedule accordingly. Nice groups.

Don't sing it. Bring it.

Matt Smith just e-mailed me his results shooting the new 17 caliber 30 grain Gold boat-tail bullets at 100 & 500 yards this past weekend. I had sent Matt some to test. In his own words "I just wanted to say that your new 30 gr. Gold is superb! After some three shot groups to develop loads I fired a .048 3-shot 100 yd. group and a 5 shot 3 inch group at 500 yards that got spoiled from rotten trigger controlon on my part"
He sent the targets as well. Great shooting Matt and thanks for your help and kind words!

I have the same question as Big 17 and also where can I find reloading data? I guess I should have looked at Saeed's reloading info before I asked that.

The 17 Remington should move the new 30 gr. Gold Varmint/Target bullets at 3900-4000 fps range with a 24 to 26 inch barrel. I used a 17 Javelina and was shooting them at around 3800 fps. I can run them at 3900-3950 fps when I get my loads worked up. We expect our new 17 Tactical to move them at 4200 fps!! (more on this as we test) I used a 1/9 twist barrel however Dan C.and Matt Smith used a 1/10 twist barrel. (they are at higher elevation) I still like the 1/9 twist for the addional RPM's of the bullet. Hope this helps and good shooting!

Saeed-
I thought a little mirage would prompt you to build a 500 yard underground range for test purposes. Don't tell me you're starting to cut corners!? I always point to you as an example when my wife tells me I'm going overboard.

You might like to drop into our place with your wife.

I am sure after meeting the crew and seeing how they do things here she will NEVER tell you you are goling overboard

Mike,
We have been working on that. Just hang in there. Its truly amazing how well the twenties do with that little 33 gr. V-Max bullet however a 36 gr. V-Max with a boat-tail and streamlined shape will scream!

No 500 yard groups this saturday as they are calling for rain and we have 30 gr. Gold bullets to make anyway. By the way I used a Weaver V-24 scope when I shot those 500 yard groups and a new Leica 800 yard rangefinder to set the target (at actual 501 yards). We just got in a 17 PPC with a 1/10 twist to use as a test gun. We will try the new 30 grain Gold bullets in it,more to follow. Have a great weekend!

To: Todd,
Your upsetting my apple cart. I was planning a .17PPC with 1/9 twist to handle the 25-30gr bullets. Why the 1/10 twist barrel in .17PPC for testing your 30gr bullets? Just to see if it stabilizes well? Thank you for your time, Larry

Larry,
My recent tests with our new 17 Gold 30 grain B.T. bullet was done in my 17 Javelina with a 1/9 twist. Matt Smith used a 17 PPC with a 1/10 twist, shooting the new Gold bullets to 500 yards with 5-shot group measuring 3 inches! Right now I'm having built the first Tactical 17 with a 1/9 twist for the 30 grain Gold bullets. I did just purchase a used 17 PPC with a 1/10 twist and will see what it will do as well. At this time I still recommend a 1/9 twist for our 27, 29 and our new 30 grain Gold boat-tail bullets. Remember even though it seems the 1/10 twist works I prefer the added rpm's at very long range for additional stability and devasting performance on varmints. It has surprised me what Matt and Dan have done with their 1/10 twists guns using the streamlined 30 grain Gold bullet but remember they are out west in higher elevations. As always time will tell so stay tuned! Hope this helps.

I recently been testing a 17 PPC with our new 30 gr Gold 17 caliber bullets. With three different powders I have been able to safely shoot the new 30 gr. Gold bullets at 4000 - 4100 fps. The barrel is a little over 26 inches long and a 1 in 10 twist. I purchased this rifle used in this configuration a few months ago otherwise I would have had a 1 in 9 twist barrel. So far the testing has been only at 100 yards, but has shot quite well. Our next step is to do some testing at 500 yards with it. I still recommend a 1 in 9 twist for our 27, 29 and the new 30 gr. Gold boat-tail bullets. Hope that everyone has a great weekend!
