Hello,

As you can tell im new here I posted this to get opinions on a long range yoter I wanted to put together my 223 isnt doing it after a good 400 yards. I drooled at the Model 700 Titanium in 260rem and dreaming of mounting it with a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50(mil-dot) hopefully that would get me one hell of an long range yote cannon.

Was wondering if it would be a nice accurate cartridge out of the box I plan to reload quiet a bit this will run me along the lines of around 2100 bucks. Wondering if I could get some opinions on the performance it make have out in the field wife say this is it for this year and it brought a tear to my eye, however I wanted to make sure I got the best.

Thanks.

Dan

RiverRat,

How do you like the 90g TNT as a Varmint bullet? Does it blow up on a coyote for an instant kill? How does it compare with teh 95g AMax......more or less fragile? I've shot the 85g and 100g Sierra HP and the jacket is strong. Wondered if the AMax might expad more reliably and was thinking of giving it a whirl?

I ran some numbers and concluded that for an exteme range coyote rifle the cartridge selection would start with the 25-06 and on up. With each bore diameter I would go with the largest standard case as all cartridges have about the same accuracy. That would mean the .264 WM, 7mm STW, 300 RUM etc. not that those are the only cartridges at all but just near bore capacity.

Sierra told me that they suggested 2300 fps impact velocity to insure expansion on such a small animal.

The 260 Rem is a big step up from the .223. It's a very nice cartridge and a darling of the paper punchers. Remember that you not only have to hit them but you have to rip a hole in the stinkers. I have a 260 Rem and I really like it. It's just not my longest ranged rifle that's all.

I think they are talking about the 6.5 mm 95 gr Hornady VMax above and not the AMax. I have standardized on that bullet for my 260 this varmint season. A 260 in a medium to light weight sporter would make a really sweet all around pest and deer rifle.

Download the free "Pointblank" at www.huntingnut.com and compare the loads.

I really like the 90 gr. TNT as a varmint bulllet. It shoots suberbly and blows big holes in coyotes at 3465 fps from my rifle. I have no doubt the 25-06 is a great cartridge but a friend of mine has one and he cant shoot a 87 gr. bullet accurately as fast as I can a the 90 gr. TNT. It is going to take some convincing to make me believe the 25-06 is any better with an 85 to 90 gr. bullet than the 260 is. And the 260 can shoot a lot heavier bullet.

I have no experience what so ever with the 95 gr. VMax, but I am sure it would work just fine. I didn't try it because the TNT shot so well and if I wanted something heavier than that, I would go to the 100 gr. Nosler B.T.

May I be half the man my grandson thinks I am....RiverRat

One of the reason for picking the 260 was just because of its down range accuracy and the fact that its one hell of a nice caliber and its been known to hit hard out there excellent caliber to reload.

However anyone dinker around with the titanium? Id really like to hear some good/bad things about the rifle and if it is as accurate as people say anything is under consideration im open to hearing any opinions.

Anyone think the Black Diamonds scopes are better then the Zeiss or maybe the Leupold?

Thanks.

RiverRat,

I think I have to agree with you. There is so little velocity difference between a 25-06 and a 260 that I'm not sure how to distinguish that the 260 is unacceptable while the 25-06 works great. In my brother's 25-06 he shoots 100g bullets about 3,400 fps while my 260 shoots them a little over 3,300 (3,340 fps on a Nosler Partition to be exact). How much difference does 100 fps make? (and the difference is often less) Either will work fine out to 400 yds or so on a coyote.

If you really want to shoot long range with a cheap bullet, jump up and shoot the 142g Sierra in the 260. If I remember right, the BC is over .500. How do you match that with a cheap 25 cal bullet at 500+ yd ranges?

240 WEATHERBY. WITH A 75 GRAIN HORNADY V-MAX AT 3800 FPS, THERE IS NOT A YOTE UNDER 500 YRDS THAT STANDS A CHANCE.
