I am looking at building a 17 cal coyote fur gun. The goal is ballistics better than the 22-250 with less noise and ricochet potential and a lot less fur damage. I plan on shooting either the 30gr Gold or 25gr Berger as fast as I can push them. Barrel life isn’t a huge concern. How would the 17Rem, 17-223AI, 17PPC, or 17Predator stack up? What kind of velocities could I expect out of any of the above shooting the 25gr or 30gr bullets? How difficult is it do get the PPC to cycle in a repeater?

Dear ST- I have built a 17 PPC on a Howa. I started off with the 223 action and opened the bolt up for the PPC case. It worked fine. Feeding was good. I also made up a 6mm PPC for myself off of an old Win 70 SA 223 doing the same thing to the bolt. Now there is a shooting fool! Back to the 17s. My little Sako Vixen in 17/223 is a great rifle. Maybe [?] a little better than my 17 Rem. For all-out hammering though I use my 17/22-250. It uses the heavier [25-30] better and faster. I guess it all depends on what you have for a platform to start with which case you use. If you choose the 17 PPC? Look for a Howa 223 action. They [complete rifle] are still relatively cheap. If you have a .473 bolt face like an old 243 Win on a Rem 700? Might try a 17/22-250. Aloha, Mark When the fear of death is no longer a concern----the Rules of War change!!

Sorry ST= 17 PPC gets the guy I made it for about 3900-4100 with the 30 gr. With my 17/22-250 about 4400. Aloha, Mark When the fear of death is no longer a concern----the Rules of War change!!

Bohica, thanks for the reply! What else can you tell me about the 17-250? Are you just necking the case down or is the body taper and shoulder angle changed? What 30gr bullets do you like the best? How does it perform on game? What kind of throat erosion are you seeing? Thanks!
