I have a tikka in .243 and the saami ocl is 2.710 well when using my stony point lenght guage I find with a 85 grn Nosler the Tikka has a very deep throat and the bullet fals out of the case! WOW DEEP My magizine will acomadate up to 2.841. My question is as long as I have a high case fill say 80-83% is it safe to load with a OCL of say 2.750-2.780 Ive been concerned with this issue so I have been loading this bullet to 2.727 but would like to try 2.750 Some people say what they think! I have no personal experience with that particular rifle in that particular caliber, but one thing you can do if you are loading bullets so far out that they are barely seated in the neck of the case is to crimp them in place using the Lee Factory Crimp Die. This will anchor them strongly in place. Crimping with this die will also usually increase your accuracy a bit. I don't think you will encounter any problems by seating the bullets as far out as your magazine and/or throat of your rifle will allow, just so long as the bullet is still seated in the neck of the case enough so that the case can grip it in place. Thank you Lloyd! if I load out to 2.740-50 I still have plenty of base in the neck and dont think It will fall out of the neck. Some people say what they think! Then there's those that say what they know! And then there's those few that want to know everything!

As long as the ammo fits in the magazine, (and also in the chamber) you're good to go!!!.....I strongly suggest one try to keep at least one diameter of length of engagement in the case neck. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." A few questions come to mind here. What powder are you using? I'm getting very tight groups in my Stevens (under a 1/2" consistently) with the Berger 88 LD and a full case (48 gr.) of H-1000 and an OAL of 2.86 which gives me a .010" jam. In addition to good velocities the slower powder is easier on the barrel. Have you tried a heavier, longer bullet like the Berger 95VLDs or the Hornady 105 A-Max? I don't know what twist rate your barrel has but the Savage is a 1/9.25 and stabilizes both beautifully for me. When I load the Bergers the OCL is 2.92 and the A-Max is 2.87. They both will fit the magazine, though the Berger is about the maximum I can get in there. I'm shooting both with H-1000 with very good results. Hope this gives you some ideas.

I agree! It is a good rule of thumb to keep a diameter length in the case. For the most part you should not have to crimp if you don't want to. Either way you are trying to get enough neck tension to get enough resistance to get a good expansion of the gas that is going to send your bullet down range. I have had a couple of rifles that must have been made to fit every bullet. (huh maybe they did) Anyway when you get down in weight the bullet would want to just hang on. From that time I have, for the most part, stuck the bullet in one diameter and then moved back from there for tuning. (thats if one diameter is deep enough to get in the magazine) ______________________ Smedley ______________________ From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.' I should have mentioned in my original post that Im not having any trouble with groups! Im just having fun with reloading and wanting to mess with COL! Was worried about setting COL to long for safty reasons. It seemed to me that say if you had a 60% case fill and set the bullet way out there the powder would lay low in the case when set horizontal and the primer would flash over the top of the charge?
