Another of us who wonder why the 7x57 was missing from the list. You can't get an accurate answer if you leave out choices so many of us make.

Since this is the Small Calibre Forum, I would pick the 308 WCF.

It is the best choice for me because of Logistics...

However for most people the 30/06 would be hard to beat.

I voted for the .270 Win, but what I meant was .270 Win Short Magnum.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

I actually made that choice, and picked the 300wm. I used that rifle for 13+yrs as my only hunting centerfire rifle. It worked, and still does.

My 257R is a more ideal 'deer rifle', but the 300wm does it all if you need it to.

After my first big gun a 30-30 mod 94 my first whitetail hammer was a 30-06 it and .308 served me very well for 30+ years BUT if I could have but one center fire here in SE USA it would be the .243win as I shoot far more varmint than deer and I love to punch paper out to 1000 here on the farm. The quarter bores were not listed but my truck gun, whitetail hammer has been the .25wssm for 2 years, its lite points good, fast and rides well with the matt black metal and synthetic stock.

My bows are, 8x57, 6.5x55, and 9.3x57.

Why shoot a 30.06 when the original is around? 8x57

7x57. In a lot of places around the world it is the min calibre required by law. You can varmint shoot with it and take just about anything else that walks or crawls.

Well, 375.HH Mag. all the way, takes everything from roe deer to cape buff.
Here in Europe we might soon be confronted with really strict laws as to own only one caliber, hence my reply.
In Europe I usally stick with my Blaser K 95 7x57 or the Mauser M03 9,3x62, in Africa I´ll take the .375 HH Mag in the Mauser M03 all the way. Shoots like the venerable .3006 since the M03 is heavy.
Cape buff with Norma Oryx just dropped.
Nevertheless, 9,3x 62 is also a perfect round, friend of mine took a cape buff, hippo and croc on the same trip just with the blessed old 9,3x62.For short distances a perfect round.
Best Regards, Thomas

Your 260,280 25-06 and few others are all derivatives of the 30-06.So it makes sense that 30-06 is the choice.

I picked 270 because that's what I have.

My 300 Weatherby wasn't listed.

I voted None Of The Above, but I damn sure will not be using a bow!

Since it was not included due to extreme prejudice by the OP my answer is 3 7 5 H & H.

I live in Alaska so the 300 was the logical choice.

30-06 is my usual favorite but I choose 338WM because there aint nothing you can't do with that one -- and the now we have 180gr 200gr offerings. Life be good for the 338.

I picked .30-06, because it's unlikely that I'll ever hunt Brown Bears in Alaska or go to Africa. The biggest game I'm likely to ever hunt is moose, and I can handle that with an '06.

Nothing much bigger then deer in WI, so I went with the 243. I think that this thread is area specific though, If I lived out west I would probably go with the 300 WSM. Or if I won the lottery and could hunt anywhere I wanted, then I would go with the 375 Ruger.

243. Accurate, easy to shoot, easy to find ammo, doesnt ruin meat like some of the bigger magnum rounds.

While I chose the 338WM I did it wanting to add the '06 after it. IMHO perhaps in the top two of any caliber for NA hunting and most of Africa. I'm just sayin!

Due to financial pressure I have narrowed down to 1 rifle.

8X57IS

I sold my 7mm-08 & 280 as well as my 20ga & 28ga shotguns & Ruger Old Army.

My next build will a re-barrel on an 8mm/06 A.I. then either 7X57 or 6.5X55 then a 257 roberts and eventually an 8X68S

None of the standard calibers listed in the poll interest me & I feel as though it was a very narrow minded choice, probably taken from Wal-Mart's ammo shelf.

Question:
Your have one choice to select a caliber for your only hunting rifle, which is it?

Choices:
30-06
270 Win.
300 WM.
243
7mm Rem Mag.
30-30
338 WM.
None of the above, I'll use my bow..

The question was posted in the Small Calibers Forum.

By that description, the only small caliber listed in the poll is the .243, and a bow is not a caliber.

I had to pick the 06 since you didnt have the 708 up there, 308 is right behind if not equal to my 708.
