...what he said! 25-06, 6.5x55, & .260Rem would have also been acceptable choices.
This is the small caliber forum! We don't need no 270, 7mm, or 30cal rifles!
Heck, there are those here who will shoot anything including elephants with .223 Rem!

SnellstromTough poll!
I am in love with my .257 Roberts but sometimes I hunt game bigger than Mule Deer so I picked the standby of mine the 30/06.
Not an animal on our continent that I wouldn't hunt with a 30/06 and 180 grain bullets.
14 March 2010, 20:33
wasbeemanAnd, once again, the '06 wins. Was there any doubt?

Stumps me.
The only thing an '06 does better than a .300 WM is that it is cheaper to shoot.

45ottoNone of the above. Perhaps adding a quarter bore or a .264 should be on the list.

WhatTheI started this poll for one reason and that is to see how much things may have changed since the last time I visited this topic about 10 years ago. And they have a bit in that; years ago the 06 would shine in at around 80 to 90% and not much discussion would follow. I took it as a given that anyone that thought anything other than an 06 was a meat-head but things do change. Back in the day old timers would argue that "while many of the new cartridges may outperform the 06, that performance didn't mean anything when you could buy a box of 06 shells at a gas station and why bother anyway when an 06 can and has taken anything in North America". But just like anything else, personnel preference and a comfort zone with your own rifle/caliber can rule the day. Perhaps the fact that we don't live in a world of limited choices or that availability has off set any idea of a single choice? I think the 06 is still the #1 winner and champ. Some here have mentioned the 375 H&H, great choice for elk and grizz and perhaps some large deer, but to put the lights out on a pesky coyote raising hell with the chickens may prove a bit much and for some of the smaller bores mentioned the same might apply to the larger game mentioned above leaving a skilled head shot off the table and the ability to load your own ammo. I still believe the 06 can't be beat nor do I believe it ever will. Just my thoughts....

DannoBoonehmmmmm........just one legal-for-forum choice to
pick from seven caliber choices? Is this the way
of Kali-fornia?
The .243 got my vote. I know of elk hunters who
used it before some magnum idiot told them the
6mm bullet was too small for such game. Elk still
filled their freezers.
Were I to freely choose, the .25-06 would also
get my vote.

Greg KI voted 30/06 because it was listed, but my 270WSM, or 7mm-08 would be equally as good for my hunting. Maybe even my 25/06.
