Want something for sheep/goat/hog 200yds max. 22"WSSM profile(.535 muzzle) 6-7lb scoped. I like wssm rifles but not the cartridges. Want something very efficient for minimum recoil but good field effectiveness. Dont have much experience with 250sav. Whats it like out to 200yd? Worth Necking to 7mm? Conley Cartidge has 250sav loaded up rather well with 120NP.115tsx http://www.cpcartridge.com/250savageP.htm Dont want to go over 40gn powder loads, less If possible, If I can still get the power for 200yd situations. What about 6.5 Grendel(ppc case)? 6.5Grendel factory has 129sst@2470 2.25oal? 48,000psi http://www.65grendel.com/faq.htm 250Sav case will certainly involve less hassle, but If one finds one of those Wssm rifles chambered for 223rem,then that would make a sweet 6.5gren. ..any better ideas? Your thoughts....

If you want to neck up a 250 Savage.. why not just cut to the chase and make life easier... chamber a 260 or 7/08....

Norma has legitimized the 6.5-284. Is that a little more oomph! than you want? Rich

A 6.5 version would be cool but a standard 250 Savage should fill your requirements. Check out the new Sierra reloading manual, they've got a 250 improved. It's impressive for a little guy! I have a 257 AI it's fantastic! Had to get the rails worked for feeding though. But I love it! It's a 95 that was "modernized" by Globe Firearms into a 308. Very light and accurate.

Yes Idaho, more than I want/need. If I neck Grendel to 7mm, 139interbond@2550 should be achievable, go well above the sub50kpsi factory6.5G pressures designed for safe longterm AR15 function.(129sst@2470) Powder charges will be under 35gn, likely 31gn. At this point in time, I cannot figure a more efficient combo. 139IB-2550mv will give about 2200v/1500e@200yd.That should do anything I reasonably ask of it at 200yds on the game I mention Hymalayan Thar 437yd-280rem139sst.HERE SST had less than my 200yd139IB figure & to my surprise was a little worse for wear. However it did the job. 139IB will be somewhat tougher in any case. Recoil figures 139IB,31gn,2550mv 5lb rifle= 16 f/lb 6lb rifle= 13 7lb rifle= 11 http://www.gunblast.com/AlexanderArms_65Grendel.htm

For the game and range described, the "stock" 250 Sav would be very applicable. My Rem 700 / 250 Sav is wonderful in efficiency, with 100 and 120gr pills doing better than most expect. The Lyman manual list some stout loads, where many manuals defer to the Sav 99, and keep loads mild. And if the Barnes 100gr TSX (which I bought but have not tried yet) shoot well, then I think it will be the ultimate load: speed of the 100gr, in a tough bullet. Only thing better might be the 250AI!

Woodjack I have four different 25cal rifles. One is called the 25 Hunter created from the 250 Savage case and designed for HBR with a 1-12" twist on a Kelbly Kodiac action. Not used for hunting. 46.6gr H2o to overflow. The second gun is a blueprinted 700 Rem SA with a 24" 1-10" twist Lothar Walther barrel. This is my favorate deer rifle. 100gr Hornady Interlock at 3150ft. This years count is 29 one shot kills on WT Deer, Mule deer and Antelope. Then I have a 257 Roberts that shoots the same weight bullet 100gr Speer Hot core. At the same speed of 3150. This is also a fine deer rifle. Took two deer and a Moose with it last year. The last one is a 25-06 #1 26" barrel shooting 100gr TSX at 3420 ft. My long range Antelope rifle, sofar two deer and one Antelope. Eiter of the two standard calibers would fit your requirements but the 257 Roberts would perhaps suit you best. For a flat shooting low recoil deer rifle a 25 caliber is hard to beat. A 250 Sav.AI is another darling deer rifle. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca
