I want to have a 20" barrel made for an encore. I have been looking at 243 win, 243AI, 234WSSM, 6mmRem, 250 savage, 250AI, 257Rob, 257 AI. With the short barrel, are th AI's and the WSSM a waist of time? It will be used as a max 250 yard whitetail rifle with possable use as a walking varmint gun.

I'd say the 250 Savage would be the most practical... follwoed by the 243, and use 250 savage load data which should be slower velocity....

IMO they are a waste of time any time.

wave.250 Savage with the proper twist and deep enough throat to handle 120 gr. bullets. The added powder capacity of the others lend themselves well to higher velocity using slower burning powders. This gain, however, can not be totally realized because of the short barrel. The 250-3000 can get the job done without the added muzzel blast. beerroger

.250 Savage. My personal opinion is that the cartridge does not have the powder capacity to do justice to 120 grain bullets, and given the performance of the 100 grain Partition it is unnecessary for deer in any case. 1:10 twist....but if ya gotta go for the 120 grain bullets use a 1:9.

If yuro'e corseseyd and dsyelixc can you siltl raed oaky?

Like most shooters here I love my 250 but a 257 Roberts is a better deer rifle. My 24" savage will only do 2,550 fps with a 120 bullet while amy roberts will do 2,850 fps in the roberts. In this case 300 fps is relevant

.250 Savage, but throated out a bit. In a singleshot you don't have the magazine limitations of a Savage 99. If you know that you will be shooting mostly 115-120 grain bullets, have the rifle throated to suit those bullets seated a quarter inch into the neck.

Nothing wrong with the 250 savage,
But I shoot a 20 inch Ruger MK 2 in in .257 Roberts and it gives me 3140 with a 100 grain trippleshock and 46 grains of H-414.
I don't think you would do that well with a savage but i have never loaded for one so I could be wrong. I would stay away from the WSSM for sure and in a 20 inch tube I would not bother with an AI either...tj3006

You are not wrong. On a strict apples to apples comparison, useing modern pressure limit loading techniques the .257 will give higher velocity every time.

Seating the bullet out as far as the magazine will allow and deep throating to facilitate the extra long oal yields a different cartridge than used in the 250 Savage mod. 99. One in fact that will produce a velocity within 135fps. of what you are getting with the .257. At this velocity level many of the conventional, old time hunting bullets will deliver totally adequate performance.

In the field the game nor the hunter would be able to tell the difference between the 250-3000 or the 257 Roberts. The Roberts may have a little bit more Kaaboooom and a scosh more recoil.

Maybe the choice than becomes which is your sentimental favorite ?

My 250-3000 barrel should arrive in about 2 weeks, along with another 6.5X55 barrel. BOOMroger

vapodog I'm going to mildly disagree with you on this one. I think they are absolutely great on rimfires.

I do not have a 20" 250 savage or 257 but have a 24" m700 classic in both. With 120 bullets The 257 is 300 fps faster at 2,850 fps than the 250 in my rifles. Although the hornady book shows the 250 with h4831 & a 117 bullet at 2,700 fps my rifle is faster with imr4350 at 2,550 fps. I have not loaded my 257 in lighter than 100 gr bullets. Midway list Encore 24" barrels in both 250 & 257. When they come in I might order 1.

It's your money but the longer the barrel the better the Encore handles. Unless you need a treestand gun I'd go for a 24 inch or longer tube in 250 Savage.
