Hi all, I am thinking of having a new rifel built. This will be my first custom. I am interested in a 6mm ppc. I will be using it to shoot paper and prairie dogs. How will this compare to my 22-250 as far as accuracy at 200-400 yds? And what kind of distance can I expect the 6mm ppc to still be acurate? Is it a long range 400+ yrds or more of a mid range cartridge? Thanks for your help. Prtsman13

just think of the ppc as a 243. its going to a couple hundred fps slower. its not a real long range round, but out to 400 its just great. i've always found that the 6mm was about the best wind bucker, and the ppc with less powder capacity than say the 243 is more comfortable to shoot. my load is 28.5 gr of h335 and a 70 gr nosler bt

Personally I'd shy away from it as in order to make it shoot like a BR rifle it needs custom chambering and in a standard varmint rifle the 6mm Remington will perform a bit better and deliver all the accuracy the 6mm PPC will give you.

Ruger chambered a few of them and they performed almost as well as the standard .243 ..... certainly no better.

If you want to shoot paper tyhen build a BR rifle but if you want a varmint rifle then make one of those.....in many cases the difference between a well made varmint rifle and a BR rifle is not much more than 1/8" accuracy and IMO that isn't worth the loss of velocity and extra cost of production.

I shoot the 6x45 and its pretty close, so I would call it a 400 yard dog gun..I prefer the 6mm because of the prevailing high winds in our Snake River Canyon where the best rock chuck hunting exists..I can hold over much better than I can dope those winds and updrafts that will sometimes lift a bullet as much as a foot at 150 yards..

That Canyon takes some getting used to for sure, and we get a kick out of the frustration from the newbies we take there... rotflmo

Besides small groups the 6ppc fame was build arouund the 68gr bullets,1/14 twist barrel and the 6Br was better with the VLD bullets. I've never shot heavier than a 68gr bullet in a 6ppc and for me 400yds would be a stretch shooting PD.

You can have a no turn neck chamber cut so all you have to do is neck up sure save on neck turning and you could find a fireform load shooting varmits. I like my 6ppc on varmits.

This is one of the very few things Ray has ever said that I take exception to.....the 6 X 45 is not a 400 yard dog gun in any way shape for form. 250 maybe and 300 is a stretch.....400 is out of consideration for this old kid! I, too, have a 6 X 45 and love it.....

Vapodog,
I suppose it depends on what you consider a 400 yard dog gun..To me that would mean a caliber that I could expect to hit about 50% of the time and it would kill them..Having said that I have about the same success rate with a 220 swift at 400 yards in our windy country...

I don't disagree with your post, just that we probably are not on the same track...Any dog gun is a 400 yard gun to me because I will take about any shot thats offered on them and do try a lot of long shots..
