Where do you zero your .223?

If you shoot the small calibers, i.e. .222, .222 Mag., .223, etc., At what distance do you zero your rifle?
If you go for maximum range, you end up with a high mid-trajectory bullet path at shorter ranges. If you zero for something shorter like 150 or 200 yards, you give up the range and you have to hold over.

Side yard, but for 200 yards, or whatever is most suitable for the bullet and the game being targeted.

100 Yards Zero

Range Finder + Range Chart + target Turret = Dead on hold at whatever range.

I like my .223 to hit about 1/2" high at 100 yards.

I zero my 223 ultra varmint at 200 yards. I used to sight it in at 100, but i only use it for groundhogs and the 200 yard zero seems more practical, Its pretty much dead on at 50, A little over an inch high at 100 and groundhog death at 200.

I was surprised no one asked projectile weight .

It makes a difference . Generally I agree with Sako 308 as well as the rest who said 200 Yd. . 200 Yd. is an excellent choice for any of the .22 center fires . ... salute

Dead on at 100 yds, for varmints and rely heavily on a scope with target turrents!

I am pretty decent at making hits as far out as 500 yds, as long as I can see the target at that distance...

At my club range using .223 50 gr. Ultramax (the gun's favorite) I sight in for 1" high at
100 yards. For eastern groundhogs where I've been hunting that seems very effective.

I zero my 223 at 100 yards. Then I "crank" it and get a zero at 200 yards, then repeat at 300.

Then depending on what I am hunting, set the "zero" accordingly.

Like some others have mentioned, zero at 100 yards, know the come ups and dial it in as the range is determined. That's the easy part, how do you dial in the windage?? Ask a High Power shooter using the 223 routinely at 600 yards and beyond. He can tell you.

I use Black's Creek range jsust outside of Boise, Idaho. The maximum there is 200 yards, so that's the range I use for everything. Beyond that, I use the data from JBM ballistics to work up a range card.

I, like many of the posters here, signt in at 100yds. With a 55gr bullet at 3100fps, zero is 113yds, maximum PBR is 171 yds with a three inch kill zone. This is from the Sierra infinity Suite software.

Back I think in 1947,Jack O'Connor wrote an article for Outdoor Life and this article was reprinted and included with all Weaver scopes when they were made in El Paso(somewhere through early 80's). It will vary of course with different bullet weights velocities etc---but the bulk of guns sighted in at 25 yards will be back on around 200 more or less and that puts most high at 100 by a little. Easier to sight in at 25 and then check at longer distance and fine tune as needed. Basically line of sight being straight and bullet making an arc--line of sight cuts through the arc twice.

Gidday Slancey,

I usually find it best to zero my rifles on the range as then you are shooting at a known distance. Much better than guessing the distance and saying that'll do. lol clap

I zero my .222 rem to be 1.5" high at 100 and as I use it as a cull rifle (goat, deer and wallaby) that gives me a dead on hold out to 300.

Bugger I should have read the thread through. Pegleg already beat me on the range joke.
