I have a Weatherby Vangard 243 WIN that has been shooting lights out for me so far and was going to try shooting the 95gr Berger VLD hunting bullet in it and would like to try 1000 Yards with it.. would it be good enough for that ???

the B.C. is .486 and should beable to push it at 3100FPS I know the hevyer 105 or 107 would work better but dont think the rifling will stablize them... I was planing a trip to town of Roseau MN and go up to the 1000 yard range up there and make a few day shoot with a few guns .. the 243 WIN, 308 WIN, 300 Weatherby mag and finaly shoot my 338-378 Weatherby mag

With a one in 8 twist aftermarket barrel in 6mm Rem, I have shot the 105 Speer and AMax.. plus the Sierra 107 Match HP at 1000 yds.... they did just fine...

one guy would occasionally show up, with a 6mm BR Rem he built... his profession was a High School Shop teacher.. he had a one in 8 twist on that... and whenever he showed up, shooting 107 Sierras or A Maxes in 105 grain... he always walked away with top honors...

beating tons of the regular crowd that were shooting 300 Mags and all sorts of large case magnum wild cats...those boys cursed this guys existence every time he showed up.. to the tune they were trying to get the supervisor of the shoot, to ban 6 BRs....for some real stupid reason..

stay warm when you go up to Roseau..

well what I have is a 1-10 twist... was going to try the 95gr VLD..

In my 260 rem I was told the 160gr round nose would not shoot good becouse I had a 1-9 twist and need a 1-8 to make them work ... loaed some up and could keep 1" to sub 1" grups with it...

so going to try the 95gr VLD and see it says 1-9 twist recomened .. will see how it works was just wondering if any one has tryed shooting a lighter 6mm bullet out to 1000 yards

I played with some 90 and 95 grain ballistic tips out to that distance with good results..

Sierra and someone else supposedly have 95 grain match bullets in their lines now..

I believe 308sako (member here) has been shooting the 95 gr Sierra MK's with good results. You might PM him and ask him about them.

I think rifling twist isn't going to be as much handicap as keeping that light weight rifle still and steady in the bags for 1K shooting.

Used to have a Browning (Sako) Safari Grade 243, that loved 105 grain Speers especially the the 105 roundnose Speer.
During the summer I used 70 and 80 grain BTHPs Sierras for ground hogs and 105s for deer and turkeys.

I just finished working up 243 loads with the 95gr berger over 41gr H4350 and 105 amax over 37gr H4350 in a old 788 with 1n9 twist. The rifle leans to the mid range powder charges. Depending on your rifles taste it could be a place to start.

Using the 243 Ackley Cooper 24" 1 in 10 and the IMR 4007 SSC powder I got these results"

42.0 grs Vel = 3097 SD 5
42.5 grs Vel = 3151 SD 13
43.0 grs Vel = 3180 SD 6
43.5 grs Vel = 3223 SD 7

Reloader 19 450 grs Vel = 3035 SD 5, best accuracy

In the 6 Remington I was able to get very high velocities, but not the accuracy of the 107 SMK. Powder of choice there was IMR 4831.

Just taking a wild guess in line with the above poster is that you will need a minimum of 26 minutes of UP. And if operating at the top of adjustment, your windage will be screwed.

It is all moot if the bullet goes sub-sonic prior to hitting the target. Run the ballistics with your MV and bullet and see if it stays above 1150 fps. The speed of sound will vary depending on air density, etc. but 1150 should be safe.

I shot 95 grain SMKs in my 6mm Ackley, used a BC of .5 and they shot exceptionally.

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

So how does one use a BC. I thought that was calculated by the individual bullet??

Most bullet makers will give an estimated BC for each bullet. It isn't precise but good enough to estimate bullet's flight with.
