I feel the 6.5 is both faster and flatter. The 6.8SPC was more designed to be a round for close in contact that would hit harder than the .223. In the AR it is easier to get a 6.8 upper.

6.8

6.5

Several graph comparison at this link. Keep in mind it is a 6.5 site but seems to match other data I have seen. http://www.65grendel.com/faq.htm

Several write ups and links

6.5 is supposed to be the premier long range cartridge for the AR-15. With the right barrel twist it is stated to be effective to about 1200 yards.

Brass should be less of problem as it is very easily formed from 7.62x39, just one pass through a sizing die, load and shoot. It completes by fireforming on first shot.

I would like to know ,in this case, what Affective at 1200 yards means. Confusedroger beer

Roger, I was sort of wondering the same thing, but wrote it off, since it really doesn't matter to me what it does at 1,200 yards, so long as it doesn't hit anything unintentional. Eeker

If it is effective to 200 yards, I consider that good enough for my purposes, which is deer and hog hunting.

Roger it means you better live 1250 yards away from someone who owns one!

It means it is still supersonic at that range!

Yep, that is the claim to fame. I have seen a few guys burn up bolts in 223 shooting 1000 yrd matches. The problem is things start going subsonic around 800 to 900 yards. To prevent this these guys run pretty hot loads. The 6.5 is supposed to stay supersonic all the way out without burning your bolt up.

I'm very enamored with the concept of the 6mmAR round and its long range potential. The 6mmAR is the 6.5 Grendel brass necked down to 6mm and enables shooting high BC 105-108 gr bullets at 200 fps faster than the Grendel. It would be much flatter and faster and have a longer supersonic range than both the 6.8 and 6.5.

The 6mmAR Turbo (Improved 6mmAR) gets another 100fps. Robert Whitley makes the 6mmAR uppers at the website above, that go on any AR standard lower.

OK, now I understand. Supersonic is the key. I was looking at it from a different perspective. However, supersonic for a 6.5mm bullet has different implications for military scenarios compared to hunting situations.
