We've been playing with this one for the past 8 years or so now, it's just a very enjoyable round to shoot. Mostly we use it for 200 silhouette matches at the range, but i'd like to try it against varmints/predators some day.

Anyone else want to sing its praises?

I have one on the way with a 10 twist. I was surprised how long the neck is on this little jewel. Having the chambered spec'd to the Lapua brass. If lenght to lands wasnt an issue how far would you seat into this long neck? I dont even have this rifle yet but after working with this brass I'm dreaming about a 22BR.....

usually we seat the bullet into the lands. Our oal is something on the order of 2.161" or there abouts. Our use norma brass and tend to shoot very accurately. Incidently we've got 1 in 14" twists so we're pretyy much limited to 80 grain bullets tops.

I handled a Remington 700 Varmint in that caliber
today at a local pawnshop, is the ammunition avail
able or do you have to load your own?

Picked up some brass after a gent at the range, because of the "funny" shape. He shot factory Norma ammo 105 gr boolits. Go to www.norma.cc to read all the specs.

Curtis_Lemay: I had a 6mm BR custom built for myself about 7 years ago. I could not be happier with the Rifle and the cartridge! I use it exclusively on Varmints and have taken all the Varmints that the Rocky Mountains and the high plains have to offer with it! No complaints what so ever!
My Rifle was built on a Remington XP-100 action with a Hart heavy 26 1/2" barrel (cryoed). It has a Jewell underlever safety model trigger. The scope is a Leupold 8.5X25X40mm. Accuracy is just flat out wonderful! I had the Riflesmith that made it chamber it specially for use with the Nosler 55 gr. Ballistic Tips. It shoots those very well but the 68 grain bullets perform even better, accuracy wise! I have taken Prairie Dogs with it to just over 450 yards with it numerous times.
The brass life is apparently infinite with sensible loads!
I highly recommend the 6mm BR for Varmints!

Can the 6BR be made to feed? I love the numbers on the round, but didn't know if it would feed our of the magazine on a 700 SA.

VarmintGuy, is it not a handicap to have a single shot rifle for varmint shooting?? I have been thinking about a 6mm BR for varmint shooting for a long time - 6 mm for better wind resistance, but with a case small enough not to burn out the barrel. But the issue of getting the 6mm BR to feed in a repeater was always a perceived "problem". Is it indeed one?

well, this weekend i'm going to try it out on 300 meter silhouette. I'm not sure how it's gonna do, since our bbls have a 1 in 14" twist and i'll be lobbing 70 gr. matchkings. Doesn't matter really, it's just for fun and to see what it can do.

btw, the 6br i'll be using will actually feed, but bolt manipulation has to be very slow and careful. FWIW.

thanks for the input Varmint Guy. [Big Grin]

Mho: I am using the XP-100 single shot action in my Rifle. Yes the feeding of the stubby 6mm BR case may be a problem from a magazine well. I am not certain one way or the other. Recently the Remington people made their 700 Classic bolt action Rifle in 221 Remington Fireball. I just months ago bought one of these Rifles and the dainty small Fireball cartridge feeds fine from the magazine. They used a new magazine spacer to keep all the tiny Fireball cases forward in the magazine while they wait to be loaded. Maybe a similar spacer can be purchased and added or made and added to the magazine to assist in relaible reloading. I simply do not know at this point.
If I understand your question correctly the Colony type Varmints that I Hunt do not need the rapid reloading from the magazine well. I get along just fine with the single shot. When Hunting Fox, Badger, Coyotes and other highly mobile Varmints I make it a point to have as good a shot situation as possible before I touch one off. I have the velcro cartridge holders on my Rifles cheekpiece with more ammo quickly available. Yes I made the same decision in regards to the small powder charge and yet efficient and accurate 6mm BR cartridge that will certainly pay dividends in barrel life and brass life.
I also have two single shot Varminters (Remington 40XB-BR's) in caliber 22 Remington BR. These Rifles use the necked down 6mm BR cases and again the case life is wonderful. But alas these Rifles are both also single shot factory models and are hand fed into the breech for each shot.
I was hoping someone else might have first hand experience with 6mm BR and magazine feeding!

I have a 40X Rem out of the custom shop, about7 years old. My rifle has a tight neck .266 and the over all case length is 1.510 (trimmed a lot),my rifle is unable to shoot factory ammo.I am also told (haven't tried it) that Lapua brass for 6 BR Norma is too wide at the web to size down and fit the chamber on my rifle. The truth is I bought 1000 case's when I bought the rifle, I segragated them by weight 50 and 100 round lot's turned the neck'sand have been shooting them ever since, none have worn out. I use Wilson in-line die's , the neck's are turned to .2655 so they only expand 1/2 a thousand to release the bullet, the brass doesn't move. I have some lot's of brass I've fired 6 or 7 time's I've never trimmed. I have a 6X20 Leupold and a 2oz. trigger,it's a single shot (you don't pack a rifle with a round in the chamber and a 2oz. trigger).I shoot 70 gr Ballistic Tips, 70 gr Hornady SX's and 60 gr Sierra hp's on Varmint's . The Nosler's and the Hornady's shoot in the same hole, literally! This is the most consistantly accurate rifle I've ever owned. It averages in the .3's with frequent group's (5 shot )in the .2's and .1's. I've used it on rock chuck's gopher's pararie dog's and a few badger's and foxes, with a 70gr SX or Bas. Tip at 3300fps it's quite dramatic! There's a lot of great caliber's out there and this is one of the best ---Try It-You'll Like It---Shoot Safe---montdoug

I posted this on the varmint side I know that there are those here interested in a 6BR. Ok as promised this is the results of my new 6BR workup. First the overview, Trued Rem 700 LH, 28" 1.20 dia Lilja 6BR Laupua .271 neck 1/8tw, pinned Tubs recoil lug firing pin and spring kit, HS Precision varmint stock, 8oz Jewel trigger, Nightforce 8x32 Benchrest scope in Nightforce rings and bases. All brass is virgin Lapua with CCI 450 primers. Powder was V-N540 and the two bullets I was testing with were 90GR Berger MEF 2.190 OAL and 90GR Lapua Secnars 2.260 OAL. All shooting was at 100yds 15 shot groups, cleaning before every string, no fouler shots, light wind blowing from behind the target (sometimes created an issue as the target was moving at times). Standard Deviation is based on throwing out the high and low velocity. My intentions for the test was to find a P-dog load at 3000+ fps.
31.5GR N540 90GR Lapua Secnar. Avg vel 2911fps H 2950, L 2891 Std Dev – H/L 7.375 group .490
Comments (remove two flyers and would have been .247, used this as a base line cause it’s a match bullet)
32.5GR N540 90GR Lapua Secnar. Avg vel 3009 fps H 3032, L 2973 Std Dev – H/L 11.125 group .860
Comments (No excuses high Std Dev is all I can say.)
33.0GR N540 90GR Berger MEF. Avg vel 3091 fps H 3117, L 3078 Std Dev – H/L 8.000 group .547
Comment (velocity right on .5gr over max Lapua manual not bad for a varmint bullet could be a winner)
33.5GR N540 90GR Berger MEF. Avg vel 3132 fps H 3162 L 3101 Std Dev – H/L 13.25 group ???
Comments (didn’t score this one stiff bolt lift brass looked ok, to hot 1GR over max not worth 40 fps)
