40 years ago I killed my first Mule deer with a 22 Varminter(not yet a 22-250)and a 70 gr. Truely original Fred Barnes' bullet. There were about 6 adult mule deer killed with that rifle ; all one shot. Being of an experimental nature and trying different bullets I wounded a number of deer. Most were followed and recoverd; a couple were not. I had a similar experience when I started useing a 6mmX .270 wild cat of mine. Sadly it was on elk this time. Bullet construction is so critical when it comes to high velocity and is compounded when dealing with the smaller calibers. Even with the 26-06 I've had trouble with what was suppose to be a stout 120 gr. bullet. Now the slower moving 6.5 cartridges have always done the job.I once was an avid Hydra shock guy. I'm much closer today to the Elmer Kieth philosophy. Can you kill deer with the 22-250? Yes. Should you? Only you know why you have the erg and if having what info you do you still want to try you won't be alone. Clueless roger
