I'm finally going to have some time to load my 25-06. I'll try 100 grainers and 117/120 grainers. What powder would you grab first...IMR 4350 or H4831sc? Definitely one over the other, or don't matter? I'm looking for an accurate hunting load. What loads are you running? Thanks gang

I ran straight H4831 through my .25-06 before pronhorn season with my new .25-06. Found a load right away that would run 1.5" but load development stopped as I had to hunt and got the rifle together less than one week before the opener. Right now it is back a the gunsmith getting a KG Gunkote. My barrel is 26" long and I'm going to try some RL 22 in it when I get it back. Going to try to squeeze every bit of velocity I can out of it by using slow powders. I'm going to try and run 110 grain Nosler Accubonds as well.

I bought a Weatherby Vanguard in 25-06 last year. The powders that shot best with 115 to 120 grain bullets were RL-22, H-4831SC and 7828. All three were equally accurate, only with different heavy weight bullets. Accuracy was 3 shots into 1/2" at 100 yards using a Weaver V-16 set at 16x. I got good things to say about the Speer and Sierra 120 grainers. They are awesome, with great BC. Good luck with your loads. I used Fed 210M primers for all loads.

Got my 1st 25/06 in the '60's when it was still a wildcat. The 'smith who installed the Douglas bbl suggested 52.5gr of 4350 with 117gr Sierra's. Way too hot by today's standards but worked well at the time. Years later, I read in a Sierra manual, that their most accurate powder was IMR4350, about 48 or 49gr. I have tried that load in several 25/06's (work up and watch for pressure, etc) and it has always been accurate....although not the highest velocity possible.

I find IMR 4831 and RL 22 best in my Krieger barrelled Sako with 100 Gr Hornady or Nosler B/Tips. Also tried H4831 and Viht 160 but not as good in my rifle. Fed 210 Match primers are the only primers tried. Surprisingly I found warm loads best for accuracy so won't say what weight powders used. KRS

I think you will be happy w/ either. My load for the past 30 years has been 52.3g H4831, 120g NP, Fed 210--this recipe obtained from Kleingunther. Groups 1/2-3/4 out of a slightly tuned Rem 700 BDL. Has literally driven the NP the full length of a whitetail. Still have that bullet! This rifle will go to my God son on his 10th b-day. I'll replace it w/ another 25-06.

I guess I am the only one that likes H1000. In my No.1 with 120 gr Hornady hp's it beats everything else. C.G.B.

I ya shoot 100 grainers try 53gr of IMR-4350 If ya shoot 115s or heavier try 54gr of IMR-7828. Use an OAL of 3.25" to 3.26" Free men should not be subjected to permits, paperwork and taxation in order to carry any firearm. NRA Benefactor

I used to use H-4831SC & 117 gr Sierra Pro-Hunter.But have found H-1000 giving me better vel.& accuracy in my 26" Douglas barrel. Using H-4350 with Hornady 75 gr. V-Max.

Find out what your rifle digests best. Both powders are capable of turning out great performance. The short cut does meter easier , if that has any meaning to you. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Thanks folks I appreciate you sharing! I guess the bottomline is to shoot both powders and see what my rifle likes But it has been very interesting to see the myriad of choices available...Thanks again!

I started with H4831SC with 117 and 120 grain bullets and then switched to IMR4350 and the accuracy came together. I was getting 1.5+" groups with the H4831 and shrank the groups to -1" with the IMR4350. Dennis Life member NRA

When I started with the .25-06 (before 1960) most of the cannistered powders of today didn't even exist. So, I used 4831 (pre "H" designation). I'm still using H-4831, and it works so well I haven't bothered to try any of the newer powders in my .25-06s, even in my 130 grain bullet loads. If I was gonna try a different powder today, it would be either VV N-160 or N-560, just because VV powders burn so cleanly in the things I DO use them in...

I use IMR-7828SSC with 115 grain bullets. The velocity is 3130 fps from a 24" barrel and standard deviation is very low. H-4831 will be close behind, but IMR-4350 is somewhat too fast for optimum velocities in this caliber with 115-120 bullets.

AC: where do you get 130gr bullets for the 25/06?

These days the only place I know of is a lad in central Alberta, Canada. He also makes them even heavier than that, on request. (Most of his require quick-twist barrels, as they are almost VLD in shape.) I do also still have about half a box (50) from the 1960s. They were made by a company called Hi-Precision Bullets in Frank deHaas' home town...Orange City, IA (IIRC). At one time I bought them from Hi-Precision in 1000-bullet cloth bags. Once I tried them on game, I never went back to anything lighter for hunting with my .25-06s. They would not be popular with today's million-yard hunters. They were round nosed, which made them just short enough to be well stabilized by a 1-10" twist. Because they had such high sectional density, rhey still did not lose velocity ferociously fast, and suited my 300 yard and under deer shooting very, very well. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

I have two 25/06 rifles. One is a Savage Tactical. It is my long range PD rifle. !00gr Sierra HPBT and IMR4831. The other is a WBY.Vanguard. !00gr Partitions and IMR 4831. The Vanguard is struggling with 120gr Partitions using IMR4831, RL22, Rl19. I'm going to try IMR4350 and I'm going to try 110 Accubonds and 120gr Sierra HPBT. I'm guessing that I might find that it only likes 100gr bullets. GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!! IF YOU'RE GONNA GET OLD,YOU BETTER BE TOUGH!! GETTIN' OLD AIN'T FOR SISSIES!!

.........and if ya happen to have some RL17 sittin' around.....it shoots better in my Sav VLP than RL22, 4350, or 4831. Best groups have been 5/16" with 54.5gr RL17, 85gr Nos BT, and Rem 9 1/2. Soon I will be testing 100-115gr bullets with RL17. ************************ Our independence is dying.

The best I have found for accuracy with top velocity is the 117 gr Hornady over a max load of Retumbo. This is in a Ruger with a 24" barrel. This rifle sure does like the real slow powders. ============================== "I'd love to be the one to disappoint you when I don't fall down" --Fred Durst
