Savage 204 Fail to Eject

I've had this Savage Model 16 in 204 Ruger for a while and haven't really shot it much except at the range.

Today I took it out and discovered that it will not eject (throw) an empty case if I pull the bolt back quickly. If I pull it slowly like I usually do at the range, it will eject. The rifle seems to want to eject before the case clears the action.

What are your thoughts?

Sounds like your extractor needs some work...

Sounds like a typical Savage......but extremely accurate!

This is easy to try before heading to a Gun Smith. Wrap some ScotchBrite around a 30cal Bore Brush on a piece of Cleaning Rod, add some cleaning fluid and spin it in the chamber with a Drill for 30-60sec. Wipe it dry and try shooting and ejecting it again.

It could be a light Tarnish, trash, blow-by or surface rust in the chamber if you are one of the people who believes cleaning a rifle is bad for it. Or that 5min is too much time to waste taking care of a rifle. Or..., it just happens occasionally even with the best of care.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks guys,
I am adamant about cleaning my rifles after shooting them. I have been know to miss things however. This particular rifle has about 75 rounds through it. Pretty much break-in and scope adjustment.

Vapo, you're right. It will shoot 1/2" groups or better all day.

I'll get in there and clean it but I think it is something else.

The Savage Shooters guys think it is an ejector problem. I'm going to replace the detent ball, spring, and extractor. I'll probably get an new ejector pin and spring while I'm at it.

just my guess.....your extractor is not completely engaging the case rim. IMO the bolt is not moving foreward enough.....

Try pushing the bolt foreward after chambering the cartridge....push hard by hand and see if the extractor can be made to fully fall into the groove.....I suspect it's only resting on the edge of the rim and not engaging in the groove!

Vapo, I could get the ejection to improve by trying your suggestion only about 1 in 3 times. The ejector seems to engage the case without having to push. I couldn't see any forward movement while pushing on the bolt.

I'm gonna call Savage tomorrow and see what they recommend.
