I was reading one of my favorite hunting stories in Varmint Hunters Magazine on African varmints by Barry Jones, where he was shooting baboons with a 6.5 mm pushing a 95 grain Hornady at 3750 feet per second at the muzzle. Barry never does mention the actual cartridge and I'm wondering what he is shooting to push a 95 grain and also a 100 grain 6.5 mm bullet at 3750 FPS. He says the 95 and 100 grain bullets hit the same place so his 100 grainers are about as fast as the 95. Any ideas on what round will do this? Thanks

6.5x300 WBY or 6.5x378 WBY if it's a wildcat ? Or 6.5x68S for those on the Continent or in Africa. Ray Arizona Mountains

A 6.5STW or any of the larger cases wildcats would be able to do this. We used to get 3675+ from a 26" 264wmag As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I looked at the photos again, it's a Darrell Holland V-Block custom rifle for sure. You can clearly see the special barrel that Darrel had to make in order to float the entire receiver. Barry says the rifle weighs 15 pounds with it's Nightforce scope, it has a muzzle break also, and a really long barrel, about a 28 inch. He nailed 22 baboons that week between 300 and 600 yards! Impressive. It just caught my eye this time even more when I read the ballistics again. I shoot a .25-06 with 100 grain BT at 3100 and can relate to a 100 grain bullet at 3750 FPS. Man that is fast. Thanks guys, I'm off to check out the 6.5 wildcats!

PDogger, I'm getting close to 3300fps with my .25-06 with 100gr Nosler BTs. My 6.5WSM is getting 3600fps with 100s also. You could go this way, or on up to a 6.5/300WinMag...or use the new Ruger case necked down to 6.5! .395 Family Member DRSS, po' boy member Political correctness is nothing but liberal enforced censorship

Africans pretty generally regard baboons about like we do coyotes and feral hogs, only they're smarter and more destructive. 3750 with a 95 grain bullet is pushing the envelope in a 6.5 bore. The original .264 factory published ballistics called for a 100 grain bullet at 3700 fps. This was possible in a 26" or longer barrel, but right at the edge of pressures and only with the right powders. Going to a larger case like the STW will gain velocity very slowly, as the .264 Winchester is already of such capacity that it is reaching the point of diminishing returns. Higher velocities were claimed for the 6.5x68, but considering that its case capacity is less than that of the .264 Win, these claims were mostly hyperbole.

Ok I understand. I,m just clowning anyway, I just have allways liked monkeys, But a few thousand in the wrong place at the wrong time could certainly be a royal pain in the ass ! ...tj3006 freedom1st
