i recently bought a featherweight model 70 in 300wsm and i haven't started reloading yet.winchester only makes 3 factory loads and the only one i can find locally is the ballistic tip coated load.so,does it matter on breaking in a barrel if you use coated bullets?any help would be appreciated.Humpback.

Hump/ If you are going to continue to use molly coated bullets then it will do fine with breakin with molly...it should take more rounds to smooth the bbl than non coated bullets....IF you are not going to shoot molly coated bullets then I would wait and use noncoated bullets...molly is difficult to remove once in the bbl and requires a special solvent and or bore paste and lots of work to get it "all" out....I use molly in my high volume shooting rounds but not in Hunting guns that don't get shot in volume ...good luck and good shooting and may your wait be short!!!!

you should not Break in with Moly, what you are trying to do is wear down any spots in the bore and keep from haveing build up, so with moly it does not polish as quick and the moly will build up quick, plus with a shoot clean break in you will be all day getting moly out the barrel to tell if it is clean

I would say unless your bore is bad after break in and reguires allot of patches then I would not shoot Moly at all

If you can't find ammo locally, go to www.gunbroker.com or www.auctionarms.com and type in "wsm" in the search engine....there are plenty of folks selling the ammo and it will be delivered to you door.

Humpback,
Keep in mind that the Ballistic Silver Tip is not a moly coated bullet. Rather it is coated with Winchester's propriety Lubalox; something to the effect that the manufacturing process of the polymer tip is not compatible with moly coating. Do you hand load? if so, and you want to use moly coated bullets get some Sierra bullets and roll your own.
