Just about everyone told me to get a 700 but I really liked the looks and features of the Savage Precision Carbine. I wanted something fun to shoot from the bench and cheap to reload so I went with the 223.

I really like the fit and finish of the rifle. The Accutrigger is a dream. All my other bolt rifles are Rugers for Kimbers with pretty wood. I wanted something fun and tactical. I'll let you know how she shoots. I may get some lower rings but it seems to be perfect when shouldering so I'll probably leave it alone.

It may be my new chupacabra gun!

Yeah, it's fine. I really like the scope. It nice and bright with good glass. In hindsight, I probably should have bought the one piece mount if I was going to use tactical rings. Two piece mounts would have worked better with standard rings that aren't was wide. Oh well, it seems to on snug enough.

The proof is in the trophies and medals, Savage is no longer the other gun, but proven the most accurate rifle out of the box. In addition, stock savage rifles have beaten some of the most expensive custom barrels in the world. This is not debatable, it's a simple fact!

"The competition featured some of the best talent and most expensive custom rifles from around the Country. But, once again, those expensive custom guns were no match for four skilled marksmen armed with stock Savage Model 12 rifles."

This list of long-range events Team Savage has won recently is getting almost as long as the distances they shoot at.

Savage recently added the 2010 F T/R National Championship to the list by taking the team competition in grand fashion. The won both the 600 and 1,000 yard events, establishing an new 1,000-yard record of 778-21X.

Darrell Buell of Damascus, OR; John Weil of Welches, OR; Monte Milanuk of Wenatchee WA and Stan Pate of Milwaukie, OR made the trip to Sacramento, CA to represent Savage Arms.

The only problem you may encounter is boredom. Savage rifles typically shoot so well out of the box, despite what you feed them, that you may be ready to pull your hair out. After all, how many sub moa groups can a fellow stand at 100 and 200 yards or so. And after you make 25 to 30 consecutive one shot kills you may start looking for a post 64 winchester or even an out of square Kimber just to occupy your time.

You have a point there..Perhaps I'll buy an expensive rifle or barrel next time so I'll have something to do and get frustrated at. Roll Eyes

Went to the range with 4 different bullet weights and loads. I just can't seem to get this thing to group. It was 105 today so I petered out pretty quickly. I guess I'll keep trying different loads. Maybe I can find one to group decently.

Try this:

Powder: Win 748 ball

Bullet: SMK 69 Gr.

Primer: CCI SR

Seat your bullet so it snuggles right up to the lands.

Start with 23.5 grains of powder and stop at 25.5 grains.

I'd bet a buck against a dime you will find a shooter in there probably right around 24/24.5 or 25 grains.

Good luck!

Did you break-in your barrel before shooting your groups? If not, Savage barrels are a bit buggy coming out of the factory and a good 50 to 75 round break-in is usually required. 2 shots/clean repeat.

I guess that would be an oopps? You really want to break-in that barrel. Here's the dope.

1. Shoot 2 rounds.

2. Remove the bolt and run your copper brush with solvent through your barrel about 10 to 12 times.

3. Dry the barrel with 2 to 3 clean patches.

4. No need for oil until you're done. Repeat these procedures for about 50 rounds. That means 25 cleaning stops. In addition. NEVER EVER get a new barrel hot! Once you have finished you can start your load development.

Good luck..

I was joking about the rifle not grouping. It's actually more accurate than any rifle I've owned. It must have been lost in translation.

As a lover of Savages myself it kind of makes you wonder why your Kimbers can't shoot as good for at least double the cost.

I have a plain jane Savage .223 stainless in the black tupperware stock and it is the most accurate rifle in my arsenal currently. .5 groups (3 shots) or less at 100 yards with pretty much any load I run thru her.

BTY, does the stock on your rifle have a bedding block or anythng inside of it? Really like the looks of it.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Here we go again!!! Can anyone show me were scotfromdallas says it is a 223Rem? But people are giveing him reloading data. All it would take to change to 50 different 223 cal catridges would be recuting the chamber, different bolt head and a different box. If you wanted to make into a single shot you would not even need to change the box (22/375 H&H).
