I have a Richards micro fit laminated thumbhole stock that I've thought about mating with a stainless Sako S491 action. They both have been laying around collecting dust and I need to do a project. I'm not a long range shooter. Most of my shots are 200 yds or less, with the bulk being 100 yds or under. I prefer what I call a walking varminter. I like the feel of a well balanced, light rifle. I like setting up on the side of a hill with a folding stool, a set of shooting stix and a sling. If not that I set up with a varmint call and call 'em in within 50 yds.

So with that in mind, I'm thinking about doing a rifle with about a 22 inch light varmint contour Kreiger barrel chambered in either a 1-8 twist 223 AI or a 1-9.5 twist 6 x 45 (also 22").
Figure I could shoot heavier tsx's, partitions , Hornady or Bergers out of the 223 or up to 100 grainers out of the 6 x 45. I am a low volume shooter, mainly interested in popping varmints, hogs and deer. May add a suppressor and night vision optics and load subsonic.
Your thoughts and or experiences would be appreciated

I think you'll find that 100 grain bullets will consume a helluvalotta room in the little case....

IMO the 6 X 45 is best suited with much lighter bullets.....I use the Hornady 70 grain semipointed as my "big" bullet in the 6 X 45 The small case isn't really for heavy bullets.

Make that 6x45 a 6 TCU. More case capacity and will get you same speeds as 223 same weight bullets.

GWB,

I had a 6x47 40 years ago that was VERY accurate. In fact, I set a Canadian 200 yard benchrest record with it.
I like the 6x47 over the 6x45 due to the longer case neck of the necked up 222 Rem Mag case.
I shot 70 gn bullets back then with 748 powder and Rem 7 1/2 Primers. Clyde Hart built the rifle for me with one of his barrels.
Throw the 6x47 into the equation along with the 6x45 for consideration. Huntingtons.com has 222 Mag brass.

If you go with the .223AI you can get lighter weight bullets that will expand at lower velocity if you deem that desireable in the future. I think that a lack of expansion will be a problem hunting with a low velocity 6.

velocity is like a new car, always losing value.
BC is like diamonds, holding value forever.

I love my Cooper in .223AI but IMHO any .223 dia runs out at about a coyote. Go with the bigger dia even in varmit rifles. And no I am not a refugee from the big bore threads. wave

It is clearly a range thing. Both will do the task but one will stretch the range a bit depending upon the bullet. I think the sub 200 is the right idea but deer is more of a sub 100 with this round. It is a clear example of energy not living up to trajectory.

I'd go with a quicker twist than 1-9.5" if you plan on running some of the longer 6mm bullets, in fact I'd run a 1-8" regardless of what cartridge you pick.

6mm/223, legal likely everywhere but it won't do a thing that the 223AI won't do. Fact is I believe there are far more better 223 bullets for deer hunting than their are lighter bullets for the 6mm-223. Course if deer hunting isn't in the equation it's all moot.

You could always flip a coin.

Yes, but as a matter of interest the 6x45 has a bit of a cult status in South Africa with heavy bullets for smaller antelope. 100 grainers going at about 2400 fps and very effective.
Mine shoots 85 grain NP's and Sierras beautifully and is ideal for anything under 150 yards, which seems to be the intention here.
The same Sako action shoots 58gr V-Max and 100gr NP's well too and can therefore cover the whole range of animals and distances and would be my choice.

I have a Win 70 short action that I had Bullberry rebarrel to 6TCU. The barrel is a 20' with 1/12" and I have shoot blunt 87's out of it. I can get 2950fps with 80grs. When he cut the chamber, he cut the throat as if it was a Contender single shot barrel so the throat is too long to seat the bullet to work through the magazine corret. If the bullets are seated to work in the mag. they have about a 0.150" jump. This is not a problem for me as I shoot it mainly as a single shot. The case capasity of the 6 TCU, the 6 PPC and the 6x47 (6x222Mag) are all the same. O by the way its a barn burner and I can sit and shoot soda pop cans all day at 250 yds.
