I acquired a 257 rob Ruger tang safety I loaded for this rifle 10 plus years ago.

First results look promising had a bunch of different ammo laying around used it for getting scope close.

Had 5 rounds loaded with bal c 2 they went into .5 at 50.

Loaded 5 with 100gr serria with WC852 max load for 3200 fps they went into .4 at 50.

My long range is snowed in for the winter.

When the snow leaves this spring I'll get her out to 5 and 600

Bought a Leupold with a multiple ranged reticle in it

Doing the math the reticle should be with in a couple of inches or closer all the way out to 5

Truth being I might not ever hunt with it.

I really don't know what hunt I would take it on when I own so many others that would do just as good a job.

I guess a dedicated antelope hunt it would make a great choice. Might take it out after yotes.

Shot my first deer with a 250 sav I prefer my 99 300 sav.

Who knows I just might get the itch to kill something with it.

I well take to the range shoot it out to 5 or 600 yards might tweak the loads a bit have fun with.

But take it hunting most likely not.

Ray: Sierra makes a 117gr BTSP and a 120gr HPBT, but not a 120gr BTSP. What bullet are you referring to?

I like the 75 grain VMax and Sierra HP for varmints.

I like 100 grain Partitions and 110 grain ABs for medium game.

I used to shoot the Sierra 90 grain HPBT for medium game, but had a couple of bullet failures and now only use it for coyotes.

My current favorite 257 Roberts is a Remington 70 CDL-SF that is bedded in a McMillan McM Hunter stock and mounted with a Leupold 4-12x40.

I have a tang safety Ruger 77R that I bought in 1982, but I rechambered it to 257AI in the early 1990s.

I use these bullets in my .257 Roberts for Mule Deer and they work great. Never recovered a bullet and never shot one more than once.

For shooting small groups in paper, you might look to the Sierra 90 grain HPBT. I find they shoot well in my Ruger 77RS .250 Savage and my MS Model 1950 in .257 Roberts. Trouble is, I can't find any more in the central Kansas area so I am looking for a substitute.

I shot my first deer with a 257 Roberts back in 1955. My daughter shot her first deer with the same rifle. I have always been a fan of the 257 "Bob"!
My current load is 110 Grain Nosler Accubond over 38 grains of Norma 203B, Federal GM210.
Extremely accurate and moderate pressure with about 2875 FPS.

I have one of those Ruger round tops that I bought in 72. She's been rode hard and put up wet.
For many years she was my only centerfire rifle and accounted for a lot of groundhogs and whitetails. I''ve had great luck with75 grain Vmax and 4895 and almost any 100 grain bullets with IMR and H 4350. I've had less spectacular accuracy results with 120 grain bullets.
A great, solid, classic rifle.

Echos my Dad's tang safety ultralight. He uses Barnes TSX and TTSX 100 grainers. Not cheap for plinking or paper punching, but if you want to drop a whitetail or antelope...

I was referring to the 120 gr. Speer not sierra I guess, but I have used the 120 gr.HPBT, seems like it was a "Game King" ??? and the 117 SPT and the SBT. all good bullets on deer. The .257 Robts, with its lackluster velocity is kind to bullets and I came to expect good bullet performance from all the bullets I used over the years..Someting about 2600 to 2800 FPS in many calibers that has always intrigued me in regards to bullet performance and killing effect..

Haveing a Roberts has been on my list for decades, not only for its utility in the American West, but also because of my great and enduring respect for Ned Roberts, whose droll wit still makes me smile and whose knowledge of guns and shooting after the Civil War has to be unmatched.

My first .257 Roberts was on a byf 42 Mauser action with a varmint weight Buhmiller barrel. For some reason it only liked lighter bullets.

Could be that because the original caliber had been .250 Savage it probably had a 14" twist, but this was in the 1950's and I was too dumb to consider anything that esoteric.

I once killed two crows with it with one shot. They were sitting on the same limb, facing in opposite directions, and I hit the front one just right.

I now have two .257's in my gun case, once a 30S Remington and the other a small ring Mauser with a Mannlicher stock, one of my favorite deer rifles. It makes a handy little package, and the cartridge, being a Mauser derivitive, feeds perfectly in the Danzig action.

Here's a photo of my little gem:

Just recently (officially..) joined the club. Had a hankering to get a little Kimber Montana of the Bob persuasion for the last 4-5 years. Figured it,d be a great rifle to get the Missus shooting.. Made the mistake of letting her shoot a fairly light 9.3x62 early on, NOT a good call.
Anyhoo, rounded one up late this fall got a nice little scope mounted on it a few weeks ago, finally got her out shooting it last weekend! And she likes it!!! dancing

Gotta admit, I was pretty smitten with it myself in the first couple shots. Scoshe over six lbs scoped, just enough recoil to let you know it went off, pretty sweet trigger. And light!
I,ve had a buddie,s old Remington 257 Bob kicking around in the reloading room, LOT heavier, one of the softest shooting guns I,ve run across, got the Missus shooting that.

Yep. First few shots, had me thinking about getting rid of some of the heavier rifles, replacing them with more light little Kimbers..
Just do it Bill.
Do it because it,s the right thing to do!,,

I might even take mine out and should something live with mine.

Would make a great walk around coyote rifle.

Carlsen Highway that is a really sharp looking rifle. Tell me more about the specifics of it.
What safety is that ?

I have a .257 Roberts built on a 96 action, with a Gentry 3 position safety, Timney trigger, converted to cock on open, 23" Featherweight barrel. Mine is very accurate with Sierra 117 grain boat tails. Deadly too...
Made several 1 shot kills on Mule Deer, Antelope, coyotes.

Thanks, I will find a better picture, that one doesn't show it up half as good.
Your Mauser 96 would be a nice trim little rifle in this caliber too.

My one is a VZ33 action in a classic British-style stock by a well-known Australian stock maker, and checkering done by myself in 20 lpi. It's fitted with a Walther light sporter-weight barrel. It has either a Bold or a Jewel trigger, not sure which.
The safety is a Satterly left-side three position swing safety, same as a Winchester 70, only on the left hand side, which frankly, is the right place to be.

I got it in a trade a while back, because I thought it looked pretty and because I shot my first whitetail in Arkansas with a .257 Roberts.
Since then it has become my pride and joy.

With reloads it will shoot less than an inch with 120 and 117 grains bullets, both clocking a bit over 2800 fps on the chronograph.
I havn't tried 100 grain bullets yet, although I should.
I just put the Leupold M8 on it, which is why I was zeroing it. Got to do some more reloading now!

It's a real pleasure to shoot, and I like looking at it too.
I need to shoot more deer with it.

I have G33/40 Small Ring Mauser in the works..Jack belk square bridged it and the bridges are for Talley Rings..It has a mod. 70 safety, a Blackburn trigger, and a Belk engraved, filigreed, hollow bolt handle. Looking for some bottom metal as we speak..

It is destined to be a .257 Robts, a 7x57, or perhaps a 280 or .270, not sure and its causing me all manor of grief, decisions, decisions..

This one will be for myself, Jack said he has put a lot of work into this action and he is going to engrave my name, address, age social security number and moms name to insure that I can never sell it...He suggests Im a gun whore and will sell anything. Guess that should work!
