Last fall I drew a whitetail buck tag. First morning I was out I spotted a nice 5x5 chasing a doe around in a CRP field about a mile away. I put the sneak on them and got to within 120 yards, but by then they had both lay down in the grass and I didnt have a shot. Occasionally I could see his antlers moving around above the grass, he wouldnt stand up for a grunt call so I sat and waited him out. After sitting there for about an hour he stood up to look around. I had my 338 WM along loaded with 210TSX over varget, I guesstimate velocity at about 2800fps. Shot him through the shoulders and he went down like a sack of potatoes. Ive never shot a deer that was as lights out as he was, but I have never shot a deer with my 338 either. I guess its good medicine. He field dressed at 185lbs.

I won't go into all the repetitiveness of the instant kills I have had. I will only say that I have had more "instant" kills with high velocity rounds like the 22-250 than with slow big bullets. Add to that that I prefer the slower big bullets such as the 30-30,30-06 or 338 that penetrate deeply and give me two exit holes, they run maybe 100 yards or so, whatever, but leave a good easy to follow blood trail and don't do as much bloodshot damage, and they still give me a fair number of quick kills. I don't put much value in an instant kill with high velocity as it sometime fails completely and an animal is lost on ocassion. Mine was a real quick kill. Big 3 point mule deer at 50 yards with a 338 win mag and a Barnes 210 grain TSX going 2900. The shot was slightly more than quartering away, I shot to far forward. In behind the right leg, out the left side in front of the left leg on the side of the neck. There was nothing left in the boiler room bigger than a golf ball. I literaly poured out the heart and lungs. He looked like he wanted to take a step but didn't. This was a big bodied deer. My son and I couldn't lift him up to skin him. I hooked up the truck and a pulley to get him in the air. DW

My first deer. Model 70 in 7mm Remington, Missouri Breaks. Nice mule deer at 250 yards more-or-less, stood looking at me a little too long, and I pur a 145 grain Speer (non-premium) into the front of his chest. He dropped like a stone, and we ate him... My pal's first Wyoming elk, dropped like a rock with a Wal-Mart 30-30 round embedded just under the skin on the off side. He took the bullet home for a souvenir. TomP Our country, right or wrong. I'll give you a Bang Flop! I was working the tamaracks below some cliffs on the edge of the Colorado river. I jumped a doe and a young buck but continued to drive them up toward my cowboy buddy. Even called out to let him know they were meandering (slowly) up toward him. Well he shot that baby buck 4 times at less than 35 yards; Hip, stomach twice, and foot. Cowboys can't shoot for shit. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone..

Bang flop ?? 16 pound 12 bore black powder double rifle 765 grain hollow point .741 projectile Black powder and SR4759 duplex load Fill hollow point with Red Dot and insert unfired .22 rimfire case with bullet removed.(Its a big hollow bit) Rim of case sits on nose of projectile and ignites if it hits something hard. Shoot 250 pound boar at 40 yards from square on through left shoulder, which removes right shoulder. Exit hole the size of my hat. We figured this was all possibly a bit dangerous and never did it again, but I'll remember that that pig flying three feet to its right as long as I draw breath. Flamethrower

See bartsche. Nothing boring about bang flops! Especially not this one. I'm still to understand the difference between a one shot, drop on the spot, open eyes, not even a twitch, with a 22lr and a six shots in the chest head and still crawling around! (Four in the head. Seventh shot hit brain and ended saga!) Regards 303Guy

I was a stander on a deer drive with my wife's uncle when the drivers pushed a red fox towards us. We were standing about 40 yards apart, instead of using his rifle he pulled out his Colt Mustang 380 and fired twice, the second shot broke the fox's spine. Range was about 30 ft.

I have a few quick kill stories but my favorite has to be from my closest neighbor whos house is about 300 yards from mine through some trees. He's a retired coal miner with one arm, a 44 special and very little tolerence for most animals that enter his yard. Generaly, I will here him shoot, wait a few minutes to see if anything runs by, then call to make sure everything is Ok. The story usualy goes like this. "I was shooting at a (insert bird feed eating pest) but missed" untill one day I heard the shot, called, and to my surprise he said "it was a cat and I got him, when I shot he ran plumb around the house and straight out into the road in front of a car" DRT

I just cracked posting photos ! Again Wicklow,Ireland,at least a different locale and February 2008.I had walked around a couple of hours without seeing much and came to the edge of some clearfell. I sat down in side the treeline to watch a while and a small herd of Sika fed in from the far side.I took the furthest away first, the crack of the bullet over them caused the rest to put their heads up and I got another 2 before flight kicked in.6,5x55 this time.

I have to dig deep back to when I first started hunting and some of the details are still a bit fuzzy on a whitetail deer taken around 1970 or so: Rifle: Winchester Model 770 in 22-250 Scope: 10 X Weaver! Bullet: Sierra 52grHPBT (varmint/target bullet) Handload: Don’t remember the details but probably around 3500fps Distance: ~30 yards Shot: Front quartering through the chest Result: the deer dropped so quick it was if he simply vanished in thin air. Not only did he not flop around it was if he was pole axed and his legs went out completely from under him…not a twitch. Upon filed dressing him we literally split his belly and “poured†out the contents! It’s a long and detailed story on how I came to be hunting with this rifle and bullet combination but suffice it to say my father who was carrying the rifle at the time (and never actually planned to shoot anything, just thought he should have a rifle to fit in with the guys!) found the scope too hard to use in the thick brush….he traded me for my Winchester 94 30-30 about an hour into the first day of the hunt :-} Not a combination I would recommend but I have never seen a kill as quick as this in my 30 years of hunting.
