Recently purchased a custom Mauser in 22-250 cal. Rifle has a Shilen (sp) barrel mated to a Argentine Mauser action. I'm also fairly new to reloading (a few months) and have my first quandry. Upon testing my 22-250 (with Leupold 3x9x40 mounted), it was very accurate with the cheap Remington green box (40ct) ammo. But, when I tried my own reloads - 35 gr Varget - 55 gr Hornady SX/SP in Rem brass - it consistantly shot 3 inches high at 100 yards. I don't yet own a chronograph but, according to my manual I should be in the 3200fps which should not be too fast for the SX/SP bullets. Any one have an idea what is going on? -Vlad

Mark, I was sighting in this rifle at 100 yards. My hunting grounds are heavily forrested - most shots are close to 50 yards at best. Rem factory ammo was very accurate - but my reloads were 3 inches high at same distance/target. -Vlad

That's no big deal. You're shooting two different loads, so no doubt they're going to go to different places. It's nothing to be worried or otherwise concerned about. Another thing you might check is the twist since it's a rebarrel. If the gun has a fast twist, say 1:7 or 1:8 you could shoot the heavier bullets.

Many of my rifles do the same or worse. depending on powder bullet and load.I've had the point of impact change as much as 12" going from jacketed to lead bullets. With each load variation most of the time you have to re-zero. Once ina great while you will find a rifle that hardly changes point of impact at all. So just crank your scope adjustment and enjoy. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Hey Vlad. don't sweat the small stuff. The question asked was how it grouped.

So load up a couple hundred....adjust your scope down 2 inches and have at it. If you go back to shooting the remington stuff.....adjust back up 2 inches. If it were me...I would upgrade to a Vmax....cranked 'em up a bit, readjust my scope and go for it.

Thanks for everyones replies. Sorry I misunderstood the question Mark. The grouping was very consistant with both the factory and my reloads. Nearly all would be covered by a 50 cent piece - albiet 3 inches apart. Being new to reloading, I guess I was just caught off guard by the POI differences between factory/reloads. I will measure my barrels twist rate this weekend. I would actually like to shoot heavier stuff - but, I've got a box of 250 of the SP/SX I'd like to use up. -Vlad
