The 17 Remington is my favorite fur cartridge. I had one in a Remington 700 for years. It piled up a few truckloads of coyotes. I always wanted a left handed one and recently had a Charles Daly left handed mini Mauser barreled by Pacnor to 17 Remington. I've yet to get into a stock but that's coming later this winter I hope.

To answer your question I don't know of anyone making a 17 Remington currently but there are several Remington 700's in 17 Remington right now on at least one of the auction sites. Most you can get into for less than buying a donor rifle and a rebarrel/reblue job. If you opt for a rebarrel, I'd keep an eye out for a deal on a Savage 10 or a Remington 700 SPS in 223 for a donor action. I think you'll most likely be into a rebarrel more than you'll pay for a good used 700. If you are close with a gunshop owner have him search his vendors. He might come up with one who has a 700 SPS still in stock. They were chambered in 17 Remington for a while.

You're going to hear that 17's foul badly, that they are difficult to clean, they have to be cleaned every 50 shots, or less. It's all crap. Treat a 17 just like you would any other rifle and it'll shoot fine and serve you well. When we were shooting ground squirrels every year, I used to let mine go 250+ rounds without cleaning and it never suffered any accuracy loss. I checked it before and after and was still getting 1/2" groups.

I don't know what your plans are for your future 17, varmints, fur, or both. There are some excellent bullets available for it. If you are simply going to vaporize prairie dogs and ground squirrels then the 20 or 25 grain Hornady VMAX would be a good choice. I started out with mine when there were two bullets readily available, the Remington 25 grain HP and the Hornady 25 grain HP. The Hornady was an outstanding bullets for varmints or fur and still is today. Berger makes some 17's and there are a few other small bullet makers turning out some excellent bullets. It's tough to beat that old Hornady 25 grain HP for an all around bullet.

If you want a 17 Remington, don't let anyone talk you out of it. It's a great round.

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." Noone makes a 17 REM rifle as of now.
If i was you building a 17 rifle i would go for one based on 223 brass, they are almost free whereas only Rem makes crappy 17 Rem brass. And for how long?

Take a look here for way more info:

or find a rifle you like with the 223 head diameter and screw on a new barrel. it is a fun round as are most 17's. my current one is an old kimber super america that they built for me before it became a standard chambering

Nosler makes 17 Remington in their excellent brass and honestly I never had any disputes with the quality of the Remington brass. I sure shot piles of it through my 17 and shot lots of little tiny groups and lots of tiny little ground squirrels with loads made in Remington brass.
