Or the maximum cartridge OAL that will fit into a short-action Winchester Model 70 magazine? I know 2.800" has to work since that is the max COAL spec for 308 based rounds. How much room it there beyond 2.800"?

I am considering a project and I am looking to determine whether the SA Winchester will work to my satisfaction.

Thanks,
Mark in GA

I don't have one to measure but I was thinking it was in the the range of 3.125". But, I don't trust my memory on anything anymore.

As usual just my $.02

I have a M70 Classic SA in .450 marlin and I am loading 500 gr. Barnes TSX bullets out to 3.13" and they fit in the magazine very nicely. If you need I will measure it when I get home tonight and let you know next week. Lawdog

Mark,
My post 64 action also has a magazine block at the rear of the magazine, the longer OAL lengths may require that be removed? Not sure... just thinking out aloud. If I get some time today, I'll also pull the rifle out and measure. Also what cartridge are you trying to fit, maybe someone's done it already?
Cheers...

Gary, I would be interested in hearing more about this project. Can you give some details, like barrel length and maker? How much action modification was needed to make it work? Thanks in advance, Doug.

I'm looking to build a short-action 257 Roberts.

Thanks,

I bought the barreled action from Clark's three years ago. I had them install a 25" Shilen barrel. My gunsmith installed 2 leaf express rear & gold bead front sights, barrel band and did the hot blue. I stocked it with a Royal Arms magnum classic stock. Now I am in the process of building another bolt action .450 Marlin on a Weatherby Mark V action I bought. It too is wearing a 25" Shilen barrel and will have a Royal Arms stock. Send me a PM if you would like any further details. Lawdog

Thanks, Gary. I have a Classic SA that I want to have rebarrelled. .450 Marlin is what I have been thinking about having done.

You're welcome and I wish you well with your project. The .450 Marlin really shows it's stuff when chambered in a bolt action. If you would like any load information just PM me. Lawdog

P.S. - Oh, by the way, I measured the magazine on my SA and it came out to 3.234".
