I have a Ruger M77 MKII Alweather in .223 caliber. I'm not sure what the barrel lenght and twist rate is. I think it is 22 inches.

Have any of you used 60 grainers in this caliber? If so what bullets and at what speed do you load them? Will the bullet stabilize in this gun?

Thanks

Wazza,
I have a Sako L461, 24 in barrel with a 1 in 12 twist and it shoots 60 gr projectiles very well indeed. Out of my rifle they were chronographed at 3000 fps.

The 60 grain V Max, might be too long to stabilize.. but that is about it.. they recommend a one in 10 twist, instead of Ruger's ONE in 12...

your barrel is 22 inches if it is a Regular Model 77 Mark 2...

Any load with a 55 grain bullet will also work just fine with the 60 grainers.. you can back off a little and work up if you feel the need...

My rem 700 1-12 shoots the 62 berger and 60 hdy better than 52 grain sie and hdy match bullets. 4895 @ 3000 works best in mine.

Find out what twist you have:
Start a tight patch; being sure the jag is tight on the rod.
Mark the rod with a felt tip to indicate Top Dead Center and a starting point.
Advance the rod until it comes back to Top Dead Center. Measure the distance traveled from the start mark. That is the rifling twist, one turn in xx inches.
A lot easier than trying to estimate the amount of twist in a foot.
I load 25.0 grains of Winchester 748 behind this bullet in my 1 in 12 twist rifle.
