Anyone have a good load for and experience with the Barnes X 45 g in a .22 Hornet?

Take a look at Barnes Manual #3 page 65..
Then look thru the photo section at the front of the book and see how many times you find the rifle shown on page 65...
I have no experience with the Barnes 45 gr. X bullet on game myself..

My hornet hated them, although they were the older XLC's. Every other bullet I've shot through that gun over 13 grains of Lil'Gun was very accurate. If I remember correctly, I was getting 6-8 inch groups at 100 yards.

The TSX's could be a completely different story...

Are you asking about the older X bullet, the XLC or the TSX?

My Ruger M77 will shoot the 45gr XLC about MOA using 13.0gr Lilgun. Velocity is just over 2,900fps. Very good coyote load.

My rifle would not shoot the 'naked' X bullet well at all.

Loading data for the 22 Hornet is not listed in Barnes #4. Maybe some additional information is available on their website.

Call Ty at Barnes he will have data. Barnes just came out with a 30 grain Varmint Grenade for the Hornet. I can't imagine that they don't have data for the 45 TSX. DW

I haven't tried the 45 gr. TSX in a Hornet, but as a monometal bullet I would assume it is pretty long. I suspect that many or most Hornet magazines will not accept this bullet without very deep seating. The problem with deep seating is that it may force the ogive section down into the case, thus leaving the case mouth exposed as a sharp edge and compromising feeding from the magazine. This may not be a problem is the rifle in question is a single-shot.

For my Hornet, every load gets Lilgun powder and a small pistol primer.

When I run out of the 45gr XLC, I will use the 45gr TSX, and, based on my experience with the TSX in other calibers, I would expect sub-moa accuracy from the TSX.

The 1:16 twist of my Anschutz would not stablize either the 45 grain TSX or the 36 grain VG. The 100 yd groups were greater than 4" with keyholed bullets. The new 30 grain VG stablizes and shoots just fine.

I currently have three rifles chambered in the 22 Hornet. Although I don't use the 45 grain Barnes bullets, I do use 45 grain Sierra's, Noslers, Speer's and Starke bullets. 13.0 grains of Lil-Gun with small pistol primers, and crimped bullets shoot 3 shots into 1/2" to 3/4" regularly, at 100 yards. 10.2 grains of H-110 also shoots well in one of the rifles. But, Lil-Gun is so forgiving I rate it tops for a Hornet powder.
Back in the old days, my Step Dad used IMR-4227 powder for his Model 54 getting 3/4" groups at 100 yards.

I am only interested in trying to get my old Savage 340 (or something like that, it was my first rifle as a child) to shoot Barnes X bullets. It will shoot Sierra's all into one hole already.

i would bet that an old Savage like that has a 1:16 twist. If so it would be unlikely to stablize any of the current X bullets.

I'll measure the twist rate. When I was a kid, all I shot was 46 gr W-W HP factory loads or 45 gr Rem SP factory loads. Will shoot either into a 1/2 in off a bench at 100.
