each rifle is different! mine loves 100gr Sierra sbt. in good conditions it shoots under an inch at 200yds. 50gr bullets will kill eastern whitetails if properly placed. shoot the bullet that your rifle likes the most.my pet load is as follows:
sierra 100gr sbt
53.5gr imr4831
cci lg rifle primer
remington brass

Hornady's 120 hollow point has worked well for me.

100 gr TSX is the only bullet my brother and I use in our .257 STW. It works great for every thing. I think it's the best whitetail bullet in 25 cal. They all will kill with a broad side lung shot, but for quartering away shots on a big buck the lighter constructed bullets no matter what weight have problems. I shoot the bullet that if I have a 300yd walking away shot at the largest buck I have every seen I can take it with confidence.
Try the TSX it will amaze you with it's leathality.

Conventional 100 gr bullets are not suitable for big game. They explode like a bomb at close range. Use a partition etc. 120 grainers are better still. I don't care how accurate any 100 grainer is on paper if it does not pentrate.

A load that has worked well for me is the 117gr Sierra Spitzer BT & 48grs of IMR 4350. I used it in a Remington 700 my son in law lent me. Recently I've picked up a 112 Savage BVSS and that load worked exceptionally well in it. On Oct. 9th I shot the best yet three shot group @ 185yds, with whitnesses. If you want, I've scanned a couple of targets with all the reload details, send me your e-mail address and I'll send it on to you.

For sure the Nosler 110 Accuband or their 115/120 Partitions are all you will ever want to kill deer sized game. They strike like lightening, and penertation will amaze you. I shoot a 25 inch Hart barreled 257 AI which about gets up toward what you can do with the 25 aught6... Even the 257 AI loves IMR 7828 when running hot. (3,000 +)

lenny: went to the 120gr Speer Hot Core for my 257AI when it didn't like Partitions. At about 3050fps, it's been my primary deer gun for about 15 years. Take several a year with it. Always perfect performance.

I'm still using my stash of 120gr. Nosler Solid Base that I horded back in the early 90's before Nosler quit making them. They work great with RL-22.

My 257 WBY likes the 117gr, 100gr, and the 87gr
bullets. It puts all of them into 2" at 200yds.

I like 117gr Hornadys in my 25-06 but I doubt that for deer they are any better or any worse than any other brand of bullet in weight's of 115grs to 120grs. The only exception I have is that I don't use Sierras to hunt game animals, had bad luck with them years ago and just never tried them again. They were to soft for me.

I have used the 120 speer in the 2506 for six or seven whitetail and for five mule deer. Although the 120 speer was a dramatic killer I eventually switched to the 115 gr nosler partition because I wasnt getting sufficient penetration at 2506 velocities. On the last buck I used them on only got about 6 inches of penetration at 200 yards. I should mention that this was quite a few years ago and the speer bullet might have been toughened up since then but why take chances. I think 4831 would be one of the top powders for your gun.

That was the 120 gr flat base hot core. I have used the same bullet in 30 cal and never had a problem with it.

I should have added that was from about 1971 to 1976. The bullets may have been toughened up a bit now. It was very fast, exceedingly accurate and a dramatic killer, but I was concerned about "what if I dont get the perfect shot?"

The only thing I'd change is the powder, try H4831 with the 100TSX. 3 friends of I use this combination in our 25-06's and they all shoot .4-.6 all day long.

+1 Mr. Calvin.

Mine ... R-P Case, F210GM, 55 H4831sc, 100 TSX, Lands - .05.

Note I am only getting in the 32xx range out of my 26" Browning 78 but groups of .4 - .6 are frequent and I cannot recall one over .8 with the load.

Was more than enough on my pronghorn at 360 ...

I used the Speer 120gr hot-cor flat base for years in my 25.06 and i always got great penetration. I killed countless deer with that bullet and probably 90% were pass thrus with no bullet recovery from close range out past 250yds. The ones that didn't pass thru were under the skin on the far side and were quartering or bad angle shots on my part but thank goodness the animal was still recovered.
I always wanted to shoot the 115gr partition but for some reason my rifle just won't group them no matter what combination i use and i've tried many. It loves the ballistic tip but i had a couple bullet failures with that bullet in my 30.06 when they first came out so i kind of drifted away from those but i'm told that they have since been beefed up somewhat. When the Accubond was introduced with claims of ballistic tip accuracy and partition type performance on game i had to give them a try. Accuracy with the accubonds has been very good in all calibers i've loaded them in and performance on game has been excellent. I've harvested 4 deer with my 25.06 and the accubond in the last couple years with no bullet recovery. Entrance hole is the size of a pencil, exit hole about the size of a nickel with devastating internal damage. Everything i've shot thus far with the accubond has fell in the scope with the closest shot being 50yds and the farthest being 268yds. There's lots of good bullets out there to choose from but the accubond is no doubt my number one bullet of choice for my 25.06.

I would agree with what seems to be the concencess here. If you are gonna shoot 100 grainers , go with the barnes or partition.
But I would sure like to try the 110 grain accubond on a Buck , I have finnaly started to get some decent groups with that bullet in my custom 25,06. My rifle seems to like IMR-4350 and RL-19.
I recently got a great price on some 120 grain partitions. so I will probably try those out...tj3006

Factory loads -- 120 gr Positive Expanding Point by W-W.

Handloads -- 120 gr Hornady HPs over 4831.

Both shoot under .75 in my '70s vintage Ruger.

Just got back from antelope hunt with my new 25-06 Tikka; used Hornady 120 grain hp/bt; 50.0 gr of RL22, Fed 210, RP brass. 3/8 to 1/2 inch 3 shot groups. Probably a little to heavy bullet for little pronghorn, but less meat waisted. will make this my mule deer load when I return to Wyoming./ hope this helps. chaz

Chaz: to my knowledge, in 257 cal., Hornady makes a 120gr Hollow Point Flat Base and a 117gr Spitzer Boat Tail, but not a 120gr hp/bt. Are you sure that is a Hornady bullet you are using? thanks,

I switched from Btips to TSX's this year to try something new. I shot 2 does for the freezer last weekend with 100 gr. TSX's and was impressed. One fell bang/flop and the other only took a few steps. One autopsy (on a behind the shoulder rib shot) showed that the bullet expanded to the size of a quarter immediately after it pierced the skin. It had a small (.257) hole through the hide, opening instantly to a quarter sized hole through the ribcage (between 2 ribs!). Exit hole was about 1 1/4". I am pleased with the performance so far. The load used in my .25-06 is 55.0 of I4831, Rem brass, CCI LR primer, 100 gr. TSX. Oh yeah, that stuff you hear about .050 off the lands was true for me. Groups reduced from 1" to .4" when I spaced it out farther. Good luck!
