The 250-3000 just got dumped in favor of the 243 Winchester. For a long time I wanted a Model 20 Savage in 250-3000. Could never find one, so had one built, I shoot nothing but 117 gr Hornaday RN's in mine. I even shot a couple of carabou with it. But I did not have it made for that, I like to hunt White Tails in New England, since I come from there, and I more or less when retro for that, all wool red plad clothes, short of trying to relive Larry Koller's shots at white tails. The 250 just died, but a lot of good cartridges have over the years. Its easy to make one up, just get a sporter chambered for 22-250 and either rebore or rebarrel and you are good to go. I hunt more with a 6.5 x 55, for me its just a way better cartridge for shooting the game I hunt. But for just hunting white tail size game, a 250-3000 with some good bullets has been and still is a pretty good game getter.

Well, I finally got my .250 in a Remingonton 700 dialed in for antelope season. I threw on a Nikon 3x9 scope and loaded up some 100g Hornady Interlocks. All I can say is WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!!! I have always been a big fan of the .243, but I absolutely love this .250!! Needless to say, after getting it sighted in 1 1/2" high at 100 yards, hitting the 300 yard gong time and time again was no problem.
Funny thing is, every time I mention to someone that I have this .250, the usual response is "man, I've always wanted one" or "I shot one of those when I was a kid and have been looking for one for years", or my favorite "I have one and it RULES!!" Makes me wonder why it isn't more popular??

There is more truth to your statement than you know! I agree 100% with you.
This has been an interesting thread. I'm new to this board and I've hunted with a .250-3000 Savage Model 99E since 1973, when I bought the rifle. I'm realy more of an upland bird hunter, but the few critters I've shot with my old .250 went down like a sack of potatos. It's always been a good killer.
At this time I'm in the market for a larger bore mule deer and elk rifle, but about two years ago I contemplated buying one of those new Ruger ultralight 16" barrel rifles in .243, and then having the barrel rebored to .250-3000. A second thought would be to simply rebarrel it to .250-3000. The idea would be for a very lightweight mountain rifle for deer and sheep. Seeing some of the ballistics you bolt guys are getting with 100gr bullets is amazing.
Great thread.
