The military 98 in 8X57 that I owned had a tapered throat. I compared it to a 03A3 and fired each with WW11 ammo. The Mauser was about a 3 MOA rifle and the Springfield was good for about 1 MOA. But the Springfield had a peep sight. The bolt on the Springfield was much easier to work also.
it is true that military barrels are long throated but I have never heard of the 1.5 inch limit.I have had many that would print less than half that. My best group was out of a M48 yugo that I got for 120$ put a scope on and loaded 200gr speers to 2500fps. 0.534 3-shot. I have also loaded 200grs to 2650fps but accuracy was not good.

Strangely enough I lived in Orange vale in a Green house on castle monte circle. I own a K98 and shoot and reload for it. Love it. When I lived there they were building Atlas rocket engines and shook the ground, from Aero Jet. Any memories? Hard to tell from earthquake tremmors? Any Ideas?

I hope you do not have reoccurring nightmares// how long ago was this?

To answer your question Scout, Many Moons ago! But seriously, My 98 w/scope shoots less than 1inch groups with reloads. It shoots better than I can, for a 60yr old rifle, be pleased with your's it's made better than many current makes and models of remchester rifles (remchester/NO TYPO) My current load is 51.5N150 w/180 Nosler Ballistic Tip and CCI Mag primer. Very accurate for an old War Horse and safe in my rifle, If you reload work up all loads of course. Good luck and good shooting!
