Mark- don't you just love how a question of which 25cal round has wandered so far off the answer. My phone # is on the opening page of my web site, so give me a call when you come through. Duane

My favorite 25 cal is the 257DGR, but I didn't mention it because of the Mauser action. The 257DGR is designed for a short action, and I just don't like fooling around with the magazine box to get the proper feeding from a Mauser when there are cartriges of similar performance that will work.

I say go with the 257 Roberts AI. You will get great performance. My stepfather and his brother both have them and love them. Personally unless it were a larger caliber and for tight quarters/brush I would never cut a tube under 24", I don't think that there is that much benefit to it, not in weight or in handling. I would get a standard sporter contour, not heavy but not featherweight. You would have a hell of a deer gun.

If you like to reload and want to go oddball you could get a 25 winters. I have a friend that has an old 25 winters chambered barrel that has some pitting on the inside but is already threaded for a mauser. Too bad I don't have a spare mauser to put it on. :-)

Duane-how does it work in the M700 and do you have dies available if so what is the cost for those critters.

I would think a 10 twist would be the way to go?

Thx

Mark- I designed the 257DGR with a 700 Sa in mind, so far function has not been an issue in any of the rifles built to date. I have been getting dies made by Hornady's custom shop- on of their die makers went to The Colorado School of Trades at the same time I was there and the dies have been excellent.($90) There are some other options also- Redding bushing dies for a 6 or 7BR will work with a spacer for the correct length- shoulder dimensions, angle, etc are the same. I have 10 twist on all my hunting 25 cals. I would rather error on the side of a little too much than not quite enough. I am building a 12 twist for the purpose of PDs and some Hunter Bench shooting.
I use my 257DGR as my "truck gun" which for me means everything from gophers to deer. (It also wears Douglas-1200rds and still going strong)

The barrel would have to be set back some, the 257DGR is slightly shorter to the shoulder, and depending on the throat of the roberts chamber to eliminate some freebore.
