1st order of business is to find out which twist rate you have. Most have the earlier 1-14 twist while those built sometime after 1960 have the quicker 1-10 twist. The slow twist doesn't do as well with the 100 and heavier bullets. Some rifles do well enough, others are more of a shotgun with the heavies. The Speer 87 gr. Hot core bullet over 36 gr. RL-15 works well in quite a number of the older guns and does real well on deer and antelope. If you want a 100, try the Speer Hot Core in that weight. It's more of a pointed soft point than a spitzer, so it's shorter which helps in the slower twist. I'm using Ramshot Big Game with it in my old slow twist M99R and getting 1.5" groups. I get 1" with the 87 gr. load mentioned above. If you have the quicker 1-10, it should shot the 100 very well. Any number of medium burn rate powders work well in the 250. 4895, 4064, Varget, RL-15, Big Game and 4320 are some that I've seen mentioned.
For varmints, many of the 99s seem to like the 75 Sierra hollow point. I use H4895 in mine for the most accurate loads of any type I've found in this rifle.

Perry,

I only shoot 90 grain bullets, or the 87's, in my two rifles chambered in 250-3000. 36 grains of Varget and 38 grains of 760 work very well with any of the bullets in that weight range. The Sierra 90 HPBT and 87 grain Speers shoot extremely well.

Ol270 and DMB,
Are these pretty moderate loads? I am not trying to turn this gun into a 25-06. The gun is a friends grandpa's and he bought it 60+ YEARS AGO SO I will assume it has the 1:14 twist. Thanks for yalls info.

If I remember right the 36 gr. RL-15 is what Alliant calls for the 100 gr. bullet so it isn't too hot. I haven't chrono'd it with the 87 but I would guess it at 2900+. My rifle does much better with the shorter Speer bullet than the more streamlined Hornady and it's done a good job on several Kansas Whitetails. Switched off to the 100 last year "just cause", doubt I'll worry which one after this. My rifle was made in 1953 so it ain't no spring chicken and these loads don't bother it at all. You'll really like that rifle for those Texas whitetails, I've about quite using anything but the 250 and 257Roberts here for deer hunting.

In a Savage 99 I shoot H414 and RL-15 with 100 gr. bullets and I shoot 2 grs. under all book max loads....The action on these beautiful rifles are just a tad springy and really work the brass hard...
